I own a Dodge Powerwagon with a 360 2bbl, 727, NP203 'case, and 3.55 gears in it. I have always liked to drive a manual tranny better than an automatic, and I think it is more useful in the slick stuff, as you can upshift when spinning a lot. I just had some quick questions regarding this-I would like to install a 4-speed in place of the 727. I know I would have to do some modifications as far as the pedal rail under the dash, cut hole in tranny tunnel, etc. Would the 4-speed bolt up to my 203 case like the 727 does? This is a 78 powerwagon, so it is not a divorced unit. I don't recall having ever seen a full-time 4wd powerwagon with a 4-speed, so I didn't know if it would work or not. Also, if I use an older style bellhousing, could I use a newer 5-speed gear box, because the powerwagon only gets about 10mpg on the highway, 6 in town, so as you can tell, an overdrive would be in order if possible. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I am new to this site, and I think it is really cool how everyone helps each other out. Thanks-powerwagon.

rather than go to the huge project of swapping from an auto to stick trans, why not use a manual shift valve body? you can grab any gear at any engine rpm

You need a NP435 Trans to bolt up the easiest. It is a 4speed no overdrive, would be the stock tranny for the vehicle. That is what I am currently running. You say you want to beable to up shift? Have you ever tried to speed shift a truck transmission while in 4x4 in the mud? Let me tell you those tires stop before you even get it out of one gear much less into the next. I am switching to an automaitc this winter so I can shift. Put yourself a shift kit in their so you can shift is manualy, you may be much happier.

The most important thing is to make sure the crank is drilled deep enough for the input shaft to fit. If it's not, the bellhousing will crack when you torque the trans in place. It's a really ugly "tink" sound that you won't soon forget. experience sucks somtimes..................
