Question Checking Spring

Going to make some valve measurements with the heads on. What is good to use for a checking spring?

Use a dial caliper (the telescoping end). To check installed spring height, measure from the spring seat to the underside of the spring retainer (small block mopar).

Thanks dl.

I will be installing new springs and checking their installed height. I also need a light spring to measure P-V clearance.

I expect to just find something at the hardware store which will allow compression with finger pressure. Is there is anything trick to use for that?

I have some checking springs that came from Crower Cams, but basically all you need is a spring with a diameter that will clear the valve guide and set on the valve seat of the head. At the retainer end it just has to be smaller than the retainer.
Looke for one about that diameter that has a small spring wire diameter, but is about twice the length as the installed height. If you need, I can measure the springs I have and post the sizes.
When checking the piston to valve clearance, check several times between about 15 - 20 before TDC and after TDC in the overlap area. I found my exhaust valve had the least clearance somewhere between 5-10 degrees before TDC (on my 383) because it was slow to close (split duration cam.) Luckely there was still about 0.090" clearance with my flat top pistons (no valve reliefs.)
On my 360 with KB pistons (big valve reliefs) and mild cam I has so much piston to valve clearance that I did not even record any numbers on it, but I think it was at least 0.250".

I forgot, to get the clearance numbers assemble the rocker gear, set the crank position, zero the dial indicator (or record the starting number), then push down on the valve untill it touches the piston and record the clearance on the indicator (or calculate the difference from the starting number.)
