I have a 1970 318 with a 904 trans. I am thinking on adding a 4 barrel to it and wondered how to get the kickdown linkage to work so my transmission shifts correctly. Any Suggestions?

Gold duster,
I ran into the same problem on my truck.I changed it over from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel thermoquad,I took a piece of 1/2 x 1/8 steel long enough to extend from the carburetor to the linkage bracket mounted on the intake. The end mounted to the kick down has a hole and the end mounted to the carb has a slot about an inch long, then i put a bolt and nut in it.You can adjust it to when you want it to down shift. |

I got mine from the junkyard from a smallblock late 70's 4bl car $7. worked perfect. Get the bracket that attaches to the manifold and all the rods and brackets that are attatched to from the carb all the way to the trans and the short pivot rod that is screwed into the side of the trans. Try to keep it all together as a unit untill you get it home. Clean each piece one at a time and put it back on the assembly. Hang it from something and paint it all with Stainless steel paint or High temp silver paint and then clear coat it with high temp clear. Paint the manifold mounting bracket to match your engine color and it all looks like brand new! You will need to get all the whole assembly because it is slightly different from what you have and some of the parts don't interchange well.

I got mine the same way as Toolman. Look for a similar car that has a 4 barrel instead of a 2 barrel. I have an m-body LeBaron and the linkage I use came off an f-body Aspen. Works great. Another thing is the adjustable kickdowns from the earlier cars or trucks. I also tried one of these and it worked, just not as well as the solid piece. cruzerjd

A friend of mine had this problem on his 74 Sat. with a 340. He worked at a dodge dealer and ordered a brand new bracket and linkage for an 80's dodge or plymouth squad car. It works good.

Some of the later non-A body kickdowns will hit the firewall in a 70 Duster.

I got mine for the same application from http://www.bouchillonperformance.com/ Its a cable type and has the advantage of working with any combo you may go to in the future. You may even want to get their bracket for the throttle and kickdown, a real nice piece that made the whole thing a painless install. Lokar also makes one slightly cheaper and Summit/Jegs/PAW all list those.

Would a 273 4bbl with a 904 trans kickdown work with my 318 and 904. Do i need one from a '67 and later?

First question: yes. Second: I don't think so. Might be easier though just to lengthen the rod you have now, because all we're talking about is the part between the carb and the swivel at the back of the intake. Just cut the rod in two and weld in a piece of a bolt (the non-threaded part; cut the rest off).
Besides the kickdown linkage, you will also have to modify your throttle cable bracket; 4 bbl and 2 bbl brackets locate the cable differently. I don't think the single bolt 273 4 bbl cable bracket will work on most factory or aftermarket intakes. (I'm assuming you aren't going to use the factory single plane 273 4 bbl intake.) Also, a two barrel cable is shorter than a four barrel cable. You might be able to make the two barrel cable work, but it's easier just to buy a new 4 bbl one. Then you can hook it to the carb, figure out where the clamp needs to be, cut your 2 bbl throttle cable bracket below the clamp, and weld in a piece of scrap metal to relocate the clamp. |

A buddy of mine has a kit to change your linkage. Check it out at: http://home.earthlink.net/~mrburke/kit/ He sells this kit but I don't remember the price. Contact him at ellenrod@bellsouth.net
Good Luck! |
