Default Tell Me About theses Intakes

Was at a swap meet the other day, saw two different manifolds with the same name. Both were single plane Holley Street Dominators for the small block. One type had a runner that went from the #7 to the #8 runner what purpose does that serve? The other just looked like a short single plane. Any experiences? I was thinking that it might be better for clearance under the doghouse so I could use a stock type aircleaner and make it easier to run a ram air set up.

That intake with the cross over from 7-8 is to balance out the intake charge. Because # 5& 7 cylinders are next to each other, #5draws from the intake first and tends to rob #7 of the air & fuel charge. Thus making #7 lean. The tube is there to take a air & fuel charge from the other side of the intake. That manifold should have a split plenum. Singleplane in look, a wall between left and right cylinder banks. It is called the Holley "Z" series manifolds. It's a design by Zora Arkus-Duntov, reguarded as the father of the Corvette.
A buddy of mine runs one on his Magnum. A 360 with a 600 cfm Carter. He claims good MPG's with good throttle response on the HI-way. Not much off the line to brag about he said. Engine is otherwise stock with an open air cleaner.

The guy that was selling them said it was a heat tube I thought he was a pin head especially with his high prices. I didn't know for sure but I knew he didn't have a clue. He wanted $100, too much. So I am guessing the one w/o the connector was the original design.

Gee...I don't know. That tube connecting 7 with 8 is a very old design. I have never seen one up close. I think you did the right thing by walking away. I never deal with shady people if I can help it.

Well I wanted to go back and beat on him for a better price. I had just found $62 on the ground and it was burning a hole in my pocket. He had 2 of them with the balance tube one regualr. One of them must have been an improvement over the other. I think that this type came out when the Edelbrock SP 2P came out and the Offy Dual port. I saw a wide variety of intakes there. Saw a LD340, $285!! I don't think so......

Anyway when I got back this guy had packed up and left.

Go get yourself a copy of the Mopar collectors guide. (MCG) Inside there is a fella selling one LD-340 for a $150 price tag.

I have a old Holley street dominator(w/o balance) and liked it very much when I ran it on my 318 Duster. It had plenty of power.I think the balance tube deal was a sales gimmick,as you don't see it today. And as a side note.. see the "parts for sale" area of our forum.

Thanks for the heads up on the LD340 but that thing is WAY TOO TALL for my application. I wanted to run a KN filter on the stock aircleaner and run a ram air setup on it. But with the Offy and TQ the stock AC hit on the "doghouse." That is what attracted me to the Holley very short. I have to run a drop base open element with double ring gaskets on the top of the carb and many dents on the bottom over the linkage to keep it from hanging up. The cruise speed on this engine is 2750RPM@70mph. I pull a few 5200 shifts every once and in a while (yeah right!).
