Dyno results from today
I just got back from the dyno, boy am I disappointed.
After the technician saw the disappointment on my face, he mentioned that I'll get more power on-the-road, due to the air-to-air intercooler. It doesn't feel this weak, but here goes the digits. I'll post the actual sheets when I get the opportunity to scan them. Max Power = 265.3 Max Torque = 317.1 Air Temp = 92.4 Note: These numbers are at the rear wheels. |

That is still not too bad, wish my measly 318 could get 250 hp, that is my desire.

This from a pretty-heavily modified unit too, what with the cam, heads and ignition. What was the horsepower before you installed the unit? Seems pretty weak for an intercooled unit. Could it be that your computer is not allowing for maximum output? I have seen better numbers than that from a midly modified 5.9 with a Powerdyne. You might think about getting the smaller pulley to increase the PSIs.

Actually, the heads are still being manufactured, and the intake and cam are setting in my living room, that way I can hold them when I feel lonely. lol
I ordered the 11psi pulley today, which should be good for 9psi to the manifold. I plan on having it installed and the D re-dynoed the week after next; the results will be posted here that day. This time, I'm going to a real shop that understands the importance of removing the 6 degrees of retard before cutting down my fuel pressure. Peace, Anthony |

Makes sense. Are you going to get a custom burn on your computer? It will help to make the most of the 11 psis that you are going to be getting. Let us know how it turns out! Do you have a track nearby where you can get a 1/4 time?

Screw the numbers. Chevy guys like to talk numbers. The proof is on the pavement! I'll put my money on the Mopar.

Kevin, I snuck over here to tell you you NEED a 408 kit. Looks like some others do too! Maybe if we bought 25,we could get a price break....Hey looked at your "homemade" intake...think I'll build one too, but I sure wish I could get "outside" air into the engine. The "shaker" hood is pricey(and ya' gotta prep and paint it!) seems like there's got to be another way....any ideas?

408 Kit? Is that a stroker kit?

Sorry, I forgot all you Durango guys don't read the Dakota posts! I'm going to buy a 408 stroker kit for my 2WD Dakota from Hughes Engines just as soon as I get the $$$. I've been teasing Kevin with this set-up. I won't have any trouble with my driveline as I tow a small RV trailer with my Dakota, and my 5.2L is just a tad short on power with the 3.55 axle I have. Going to a 5.9L and a 3.92 axle really didn't seem worth the money, but the 6.7L certainly is!The crank, rods and pistons(with new rings) goes for $1600. Add the Stage 3 thottle body for $325, and I'm knocking on the door of 300HP, with stock reliablity. That'll tow my trailer just fine. I'll probably get the new R/T heads too, mainly because so many Magnum heads are cracked when you remove them. If you leave 'em alone, their OK. I posted to the Dakota guys"Yea, though I walk thru the valley of Mustangs and Cameros, I will fear no evil, for I have the most motor in the valley!" I was thinking I need to rig a "Road Runner" type cartoon sign on the tailgate saying "BYE!"

What an outstanding idea. I wasn't aware that a stroker kit was available for the magnum motor. With the aluminum Magnum heads and the stroker kit, a gain of over 150 hp would be possible while reducing weight and increasing engine reliability.
What kind of pistons are included with the kit? Can you ask for hyperetectic (spelling?) pistons? Are they forged? $1,600 seems a bit cheap. Who makes the components? I installed a stoker kit in my friends VW, bringing the VR6 up to 3.2 liters and it made a huge difference! |

You can check all the specs out at www.Hughes Engines .com. The crank is a new cast Mopar, KB hyperketic pistons, Ross forged pistons are optional(more$), I forget the standard rods, but you can upgrade to Eagles, ARP fasteners throughout. The only machine shop work needed is a clean-up bore(Mopar says don't go above 4.12 on a standard Magnum block) a little block notching for the crank throws to clear, and milling the tops of the pistons for clearence. With a blower, I'd pony up for cross bolting the mains(pretty cheap insurance against cap walk) get the Clevite 77 main bearings, and have one BAD-ASS Durango. You can pick-up a bone-yard Magnum engine complete for less than a grand now, and you'll have a couple hundred bucks worth of "cores" in it. I've not seen anything for the money that will give equal results. DC cancelled their 6.4L based on the Magnum LA block(stupid Germans think Durango sales are cutting into "MB" sales, and they're giving up the van market to Ford/GM by not having a 6L engine, that's required by schools and most Gov. agencies). Do some looking, won't cost a thing. My local machine shop says they can do their part for $500-900 depending on alot of things(at least they're honest about it)

Dont use the 1.7s if you have the custom ground Crane Cam. 1.6's are for upgraded cams and 1.7's will give you more lift and they are for the stock cam. Crane also recomends 1.6's.
Also are you running an 8-rib pulley, if so you probobly have belt slippage. If you want a 7-rib 9# pulley contact Scott Quaranta (mquarantaca@earthlink.net) |

If you want a 408 stroker for a blower get KRC Performances Blower Short Block. You get everything includong the block unlike some places, the block is already machined and assembled

Thanks for helping me clear that up. I must now decide whether or not to keep the stock cam (love the low-end power) and buying the 1.7's, or installing the Crane cam and 1.6's.
Thanks for the head's up. Anthony |
