Default blown tranny in '93 carravan

The tranny went out in my moms 93' caravan the other day. She had it towed home and i was trying to figure out what was wrong. I started it up, put it in drive and nothing happened. So i hit the gas alittle and POP, then all the tranny fluid ended up in the street. I was thinking about getting a new tranny and doing it myself. Does anyone have any ideas? I have never worked on a front wheel drive car. Will this be more then i want to get into? what is involved?
thanks,
-Mike

Are you sure the trans is bad? it sounds like you have a restriction in the fluid path, when you revved it it blew a line possibly, did she drive over something and kink a line ? Where did the fluid come from? drop the pan if in doubt,a bad trans will have a ton of metallic debris in the pan,if it does be sure to flush the cooler and lines before you install a new one................PRO..........

Without seeing it, or you explaining where you see the fluid coming from I would guess the pin has broke in the diff and you have made a window in the case (just a guess mind you, where do you see the fluid coming from?). With all the updates this trans has seen since 93 I would opt for a new one. Just my opinion.
