Question

I just saw a 340 -360 cross ram intake advertised. I have never heard of one. Have any of you? Who would make carbs and linkages for this? Not to mention air cleaners, etc...

Is a cross ram that much better than a single plane M-1 that it would be worth it to switch? (of course the kewl factor is there..)

mtv8n;

The cross ram is a race intake. Edelbrock put out the STR series cross ram. STR meaning Street Tunnel Ram of course.
Why?..did you see one for the Magnum head?
That would be cool. The thing with cross rams are that they are tuned runners. The wrong one would really suck on the street. Or if the combo was wrong.
I don't know who might make the linkage for them. You could copy the Big Block versons.

A local edition of Special Interest vehicles has it in the classified section. The guy wants $275 for it, but I'd have to call him to find out exactly what it is.

I couldn't fit a tunnel ram under my hood, it's tight enough with the M-1.

It is an STR-12 if its for a small block.I got one. The linkage Is very similar to the big one, center pivot working on two carters facing each other. There is a pic of Vic Edelbrock working on one in a 1969 magazine article. His has 2 holleys facing forward with a common linkage operating both carbs. I ran mine with 2 holleys, one forward, one backward using a bicycle brake cable to link the two linkages together, real easy. I have a custom base on mine as I got the bottom only in the sale. 1/4 plate aluminum will buckle on first backfire, 3/8 AL with a freeze plug will survive, just replace freeze plug after it blows off! I also have a single 4 top I made with same 3/8 AL. Haven't ran it in a while, my cam is too mellow (MP 284/484) 275.00 eh???? I've only actually seen mine, ever.

Its 8 1/2 inches tall from the distributor plane to the top of a Carter's airhorn. Not much taller than a Performer setup. It extends right out to the edges of a M/T cast valve cover. Ill try and find some pics. How do you post a pic on this forum?

Looking back on that article, the STR-12 with 2 Holley 600's picked up 30 horses from 4000 to 6000 with no other mods from a single AVS and LD-4B setup. It was only down 4 HP@ 2500 from previous LD-4B/AVS. 780 Holley did only slightly better than AVS on LD-4B and only after 5500 (+15@6200) but no where near STR. Not bad for an intake swap!

That intake actually isnt much taller as pishta said. It is like having a 1" spacer under your carb on a stock intake. It is wider though but that shouldn't matter as much as the actually height of the carbs.

It just looks so big because it is wide. The max-wedge Crossrams fit inder the hoods of stock cars without scoops so should the smallblocks even more so.

Mtrv8n, the pic looks worse than it really is in heighth. I had it in my '65 cuda, with Edelbrock Pro-Flow filters, the triangle bicycle seat looking ones, and it didnt hit anything.

the first top I made had 2 390's on it. It actually idled fairly well on the first attempt. Youll have to get the Holley dual carb equalizer tube for the vacuum pots if you really want to get "correct", otherwise, try and find a few OLD carters, the ones with the vent tubes shaped like an X on top. They were on the small side back then. Edelbrock/Carter 500's are also real good carbs for this, they are quite expensive though. Get creative and run 2 Holley 350 2bbl's. That'll turn heads.

I like the 500's, hmm, electric choke, butterfly control for the secondaries,.....

Gotta have the choke, I drive this all year round. And I like Edelbrocks, they don't leak like Holley's ....

How about Weber's from a 'vette?

Webers from a Vette? Are we talking IDA's or side draft? IDA's work well, one in the center, and two outboard. All running parallel but offset from back to front. I think Offy makes a top and linkage for their "convertible" chevy intake (looks identical except goes the other way) for 3 Webers. GM had their cross fire fuel injection setup that would be easy to adapt to this intake.
