Default Stupid Torque Converter Question #3

I have a 360 torque converter with balance weights. If I die grind the weights off, can I use this converter behind my 318? Will this damage the converter in any way?

Shouldn't

I took a hammer and punch to the weights on my 440's convertor and welded the weights on my 318 convertor for use behind my 400. Ran Great, even stalled around 2400 - cheap stall!

If you take the weights off (which people do) you will have a neutrally balanced converter in theory. Mopar 727 converters can be used on any motor with a 727 trans if the correct flexplate is being used. Sounds as if your 360 with no weights will work with a 318 engine.

Thumbs up

Been there, done that,( on a 400 to use on a 383), works just fine. Just be careful not to damage the converter. And if your going to re install behind a externally balanced engine, get the right weights. there are 4 different sets/sizes, ( 360, 400/383,440, and 440+6).

There is no question that there are different sizes. I used 440 weights for my 400 cause that is what I had. Worked fine. I hate to say this, but Mopar's have the worst balanced engine. don't get me wrong, I would never dream of owning anything else, but at the factory they must have been..."1....2....3...Ah, it's fine, let 'er RIP!"

Without the weights it's just a neutral balanced converter.. just like you can have the 360 weight added onto a 318 converter, which is what I have to do. So far i haven't had a 360 tranny behind the 360.
