Default 318 stroker...

G'day all,

I know there's been some talk of stroking 360's and 340's,
but has anyone stroked a 318 with the same 4" crank, and
if so, how do they perform, what capacity achieved, what
rods and/or secrets to achieve this.

Cool

In the October 2001 issue of Mopar Muscle magazine, they bored and stroked a 318 polyspheric engine. That yielded 402 cubes and got 405.2 horse at 5600 rpm and 442 lbs ft of torque at 4400 rpm on pump gas and no juice! Yow! That's big block power from a motley little 318. Pick up the mag (if you can get it downunder) and they have the full recipe for building this monster 318. Or go to their web site at www.moparmusclemagazine.com

That would be great Steven,

I sort of remember someone saying you can get them out to
about 390 something. But how I don't know?

U can get em out to 355 using a 360 crank, but u wont be able to use the 318 heads.Im lucky my uncle is doing all the work on the cheap,if ur mate that used to work for hdt can do the same it may be viable.
il go scan em now and send em to ur address.
Shurely cant hurt when people think u have a 318 under the bonnet, little do they know haha

Depends on the 318 heads you have.

I run the last model 318 2bbl heads used before the magnum engine came out on my 360. These are high velocity heads more than high flow, although they can be made to flow well and still keep the velocity up. These are the infamous "302" castings.

In a back to back, several thousand mile test, I ran a set of stock 340'360 J heads with 1.88/1.60 valves, then I swapped in the 318 heads, both ran the same intake a Performer. Same carb, with slight jetting differences. All this atop the same 79 360 shortblock.

The 318 heads beat the J head in power, I can spin the tires in 1st and grab rubber going into second and third (I have a 4 speed) with the 318 heads, something I could not do with the J heads. I get 21.5 mpg on the highway with the 318 heads, I was lucky to get 18 with the J's. I can do 130 mph with the 318 heads, I was lucky to get to 120 mph with the J's and a larger carb.

I want to get another set of the 302 castings and add the 1.88/1.60 valves along with a bit of bowl work. I ought to get the best of both worlds then.

Steve

Hey, Dean318:

I forgot to mention that to get 402 cubes out of a 318, you have to bore it out to 4 inches with a 4 inch stroke (4 x 4). The mag does a great job of describing the "recipe" for this engine build up.

Default 318 Stroker...

Hey BBodiesrule!

For the life of me I can't find that info on the Website,
do you have an electronic version of this document.
Or can you post the link to it... I haven't seen the
publication on our newstands down here, but I'll enquire.

Thanks

Well, how do you like that? The web site address is on the bottom of every page of the mag as www.moparmusclemagazine.com. Yet when I try to go there, I get no results, either. The mag is an e-map usa magazine, so I went to their web site...no sign of Mopar Muscle mag. Well, keep you eye on the newstand and if it never show up, email me at bednarhome@juno.com and I will mail you part one and two.

I have been to Melbourne three times...I love your city and country. I even climbed Uluru on one trip!
