AMC's are OK buy me. If you have a question, let er rip. I'm not real cozy with them. I have done some work on them in the past. Not a whole lot though. Most of the tinkering was on a 360 AMC in a Grand Cherokee, '79. It was to pass emmisions as well. Still have the cam hanging around that never was installed.
Same basic ideas still hold from engine to engine.

Default MOPAR!!!

I just got a bone-stock and cherry CJ7 - '82 with a 258-6, and I'm thinking about putting one of my 440s in it, backed up by the stock drive train. Not a "sidestep the clutch at 5500" type rig, just for a little more responsiveness. Whadday'all think??

saw this covered in a 4wd mag a few years back. they said it would be a very hard swap just due to the extra weight and length of the big block. i would highly recommend the 360. its lighter, shorter, and can make enough power to make rock crawling easy.

Default My advice

Stick with the 258.

The engine is bulletproof and torquey as hell.

There is a lot that you can do to a 258 to improve performance. Mopar Performace sells a fuel injection kit. If I'm not mistaken, there are also 4bbl manifolds and split headers for those engines.

The 258 was a perfect engine for that Jeep. It's got great torque characteristics for offroad driving, rock solid reliability, and a low enough weight that your front end won't sink into every mud and sand pit you encounter. I have owned both I-6 and V-8 bobtail Jeeps (one wrangler, a CJ-7 and a CJ-5) and I will tell you that the best offroad performace comes from the I-6.

Just my $.02

If you decide to stick with the 258 but want a little more top-end power, you can put the 4-liter Jeep head on it, it's basically a bolt-on swap. You have to use the correct manifolds, I think the exhaust is the same but the intake has to be the 4-liter piece (or vice-versa). Go to

http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/40Head/40Head.htm

if you want to learn more about the swap. Also you could drop in an AMC 401, they just bolt right in using factory parts.
