I HAVE A 371 CID SMALL BLOCK WITH 202 INTAKE PORTED WITH A 750 HOLLEY VAC SEC. AN H PIPE WITH HEADERS WITH 28 INCH TIRES WITH 391 POSI WITH 727 QUICKSHIFT. THE HEADS WERE CC'D BY THE MACHINE SHOP AND COMPUTER FIGURED TO A COMPRESSION RATIO OF 8 TO 1 WITH THE .024 HEAD GASKET AND THE .030 SHAVED HEADS. IF I ADVANCE MY 280 DURATION #992 CAM 2 DEGREES CAN I OVERCOME THE CYLINDER PRESSURE LOSS BY THE 8 TO 1 COMPRESSION RATIO? SUMMIT SOLD ME THE WRONG PISTONS WHICH ARE TOO INSET INTO THE BLOCK. THE CAR WEIGHS 3700 LB AND IS A 70 CHARGER. THANKS FOR ANYONES ADVISE. bruce

Only thing I know about cam timing, is that if you advance it, it ashould help with torque. Like wise if you retard it, it should build more top-end. I'm not sure which way you should go.

Take the heads off and have them cut another.050 and use the thin felpro head gaskets. I know they have them for big blocks(.015 compressed) and advance the cam. The 3700 lb car (w/o driver) needs all the help it can get down low.

thanks for the advise. maybe i will advance the cam 2 degrees and see if there is a difference. if i mill the heads another .050 itll probably cut into the valves. they checked out at 56 cc.
