My dad is an HVAC engineer, he says that a typical car AC is on the order of 12,000 BTU/hr. That's a lot higher than you think you'd need for the car, but remember that the insulation in a car is pretty poor compared to a house... you don't have double pane windows and certainly don't have 4" of fiberglass insulation all around the cockpit!

How bout evap size?
Thanks goose!
Could you ask your dad about the square inches inside the evaporator? What would be the max with stock compressor and still be able to flood in properly. How many Cubic inches is in a factory evap? Thanks, todd |

Cars tend to have eqal or higher capacity than house HVAC systems because they are expected to cool the vehicle in a short period of time. Houses can take 1/2 hour and nobody complains. If your car took 1/2 hour to cool --> you would complain.
The size of evaporators is usually given in length x width x how many fins. It is usually limited by the area given to package the evaporator in and how good the manufacturer can make them. Keep in mind that the high and low pressures in the system also will affect performance. |
