Gears and brands
If I want an equal amount of off the line speed and top end, what gears should I get and what brand?

WOW! What a general question. You sound like my buddy.
I told him to get 3.55's. He has a (Try not to laff) Buick 455. Well built. He loves his top end with the hwy gears but complained about the lack of take off. With the 3.55's, he could burn them up nice. Then he complained that he didn't have top end. He was afraid to wind it past 4500 for some reason. (Got me.) So I told him to check out the possibility of a 4 spd auto. He sprung the bucks and presto, street beast. I don't think you'll need an overdrive, but there a nice addition. Randys ring and pinion also have 3.73's. Tire size also has something to do with the feel of the car as well as the torque converter used. Amount of torque the engine makes is another issue as well. Brands to look at would be U.S. Gear & Richmond. Theres another that I can't think of there name at the moment. It'll come to me. Or someone else will post it. |

Heres what I run,in my 8.75,I have a 3.23 posi with 28" tall 275/70/15s which gives me a corrected 2.93 ratio for hwy cruising, its awesome Ive gone 158mph indicated and its verified(gps)now I have a 3.09 1st gear in my 4 spd which when mutiplied gives me a 9.05 1st final, most cars have a 2.45 1st and with 3.91s would have a 9.57 final drive so I still leave off the line hard, then for dragstrip fun I drop the 3.91s in with 26" M/Ts which gives me 1st final drive of 12.0 which is equivelant to a 2.45 1st with 4.88s!! If I run my 3.91s with the 28" tires i get a corrected 3.61 which is ok for boulevard cruising. It only takes 30 min max to change my center drop out.I ran 235/60/15 (26")drag radials at the track and still went 12.58 with a 1.82 60 ft.Chryslers gear ratio are figured on a 26" tall tire.add or subtract .15 for every inch of tire,if you went with 3,55 and had 28" tires youd have a 3.25 corrected...........PRO.....
