Question

Why do they call them 451s? A 4.4 bore w/ 440 crank comes out to like 456 ci. What is the deal

4.375 bore is a common bore size since you can use Chevy racing rings. 4.375 bore is a 0.035 over 400 block and it gives you 451 inches when using a 3.750 stock stroke.

my first was a .030 383 block, thats 431 cubes, the next was a .030 400 and that ones is 450 cubes and the one I am working on now is .040 and thats 452 cubes but you kind of bring up a good point.
I can't tell you how many people call my engines 451 when I tell then they are low deck strokers(400+440 crank) right away that makes them all 451's and when I have said I have a 450 they say no you mean a 451,and sometimes it goes on from there, some people don't realize bore has everything to do with size.
