Good question. Really comes to a personal opinion I think. The Durango is bigger, inside and out and has more up to date styling.

The Jeep is slightly more refined, has more available features but costs way more and is likely to be restyled fairly soon.

I bought the D because it is more handsome, seems to be more rugged and can do more work.

Default jeep vs. durango

Sorry, LOL, I guess I didn't make myself clear. was curious about mileage, 4.7 vs. 4.0 or 5.9, quality of fit and finish, etc. But thanks for the input, I personally , really lean toward the durango, I think it looks better! (wouldn't have any thing to do with the fact i have a dakota, huh.)

I would think the 4.0L would get better MPG for the fact that the Jeep is about 800lbs lighter or more. But gas milage isn't everything If you think you'll like the D better get it.

BTW my 5.9L gets 12-14 city and 16-17 highway.

Default jeep vs. durango

when my wife drives the jeep, it gets 17 mpg, when I drive it it gets a little less, so far , for the mileage I would rather have the power of the V8 and suffer a little on mileage, but so far, it looks like only 5.9 people have posted, I would like to hear from someone with a 4.7 to make a more informed decision.

Default Jeep vs Durango

I had a 98 Grand Cherokee 4.0 before the Durango. I got the Durango for the room, 3rd seat, and the full frame. I don`t do any more hard core off roading, so the capabilities of the D are enough for me. I got the 4.7 and I love it! Mileage, 14/18 so far. Go for it! My wife likes the D better than the Jeep.

I have the 5.2L with 3.55s and do good to get 11-12 mpg in town, I haven't ever taken it on a highway trip since I have owned it but the 31s with 3.55s don't work as well on the 1.9 mile trip I drive each day.

That said, I love the Durango and would choose it any day over the Jeep.

Well I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2x4 with the 4.7 and tow package. My wife has a 1999 Durango 2x4 5.9 with the tow package (3.92’s). I have towed my Duster with trailer (5250Lbs) with both of these SUV’s. I’ll take the Jeep every time unless you really need the additional third seat or interior room to haul stuff.

The Jeep is much faster (15.71 /16.61), much quieter (not even close here), has better brakes, rides better and gets much better gas mileage (18/14 highway) than the 5.9 Durango. I still like the Durango for the times when I really need to haul lots of stuff, but for 99.9% of my use including towing, the Jeep wins in my book.

Hey, they are both MOPARS, how can you go wrong?

I can tell you that the Jeep has more road noise than the Durango. My father in law has a 1998 Grand Cherokee, and after driving in my Durango, the Grand Cherokee sounds like a 1965 Volkswagon Bug on the inside.
