Unhappy 360 / 727 Balance question (again)

I know this question has been asked many times before, but I am at the stage of the game where i need help.
Does anyone know how much weight, and where to weld it on a 360/727 torque converter? Or would any auto tranny shop know or be willing to do this for me? I bought a 2500 stall MPP conv. with no counter balance weights on it. Please help me
thanks for any help you can throw my way!

You should consider the B&M balanced flexplate for the 360. Then you could change converters anytime and not have to worry about the balance weight on the converter.

Hey now that,s a good question but heres another one , would the b&m balanced flexplate work on a 73 340, 727 that has been completley balanced at an engine shop?

That depends on if it was balanced back to stock external balance or internally balanced. If it was balanced to stock external balance the B&M flexplate should work.

Default externally balanced

Thanks Darn Dart. The 340 is not stock, trw forged pistons, resize rods with cleaned up cast crank so I think it just might work? My stall now is 2100 but I,m thinking of 3000 or 3500 stall for it.Thanks Tim

Unhappy $$$$???

Isnt that flexplate kinda pricey? car project money is a little scarce now. I wish people would check out all the parts I have for sale in RWD section. Then I could afford to finish this car before winter seta in.
Is that the flexplate that is round with a semi-circle cut out of it?
thanks.

Yea 5th Ave Sleeper, the B&M flexplate looks like a circle with one corner cut off, and I think they cost about $90. I just saw one go out on ebay a while ago for $45. Keep an eye out for one.

Default WAIT A MIN. THERE!

A '73 , 340 is not the same balance as a 360. That there be an oddball engine. It's the only externaly balanced 340 there was and the weights are NOT the same as a 360.
It should be redone as a 340 internal balance engine.

Lasalles; Yes it can work.

Default 5th Ave Sleeper

I saw the flywheel listed in Jegs part #130-10236 and it says fits a external balance 360 with 727 auto trans. Price $73.99.

Both times I've put trannies behind my 360 I've just brought the converter into the tranny shop and paid them something like $17US to have the weight added on. They did it while we waited, had the weight and knew all about it. All I told them was that I had a '79 360 and I'm putting a 318 tranny behind it, and they basically finished off and said 'and you want the counter balance weight added on, right?'..

That B&N flexplate looks nice, but the freggin thing was going to be up around $200Canadian by the time it got here.. no thanks!

i bought a b&m plate on e-bay for $49 +ship, i'll never use a weighted converter again. this is a killer part! i've seen alot of broken stock flex plates , i dont think this one will ever break. unless your in a hurry keep your eye on e-bay there for sale reguraly, becarful though i think they list two different ones one for a 904 and another for a 727 why i'm not sure. mine has two set of holes for the big and small converter bolt patteren

I read somewhere that some 727s have a different style flexplate then 904s or something.. I just used the same one and it worked fine..

For the amount of transmissions I'd actually go through compared to the price I'm staying with the weight. The 360 killed one 904 and now has a non-l/u 727 behind it. Shouldn't have to worry about it for a while. If I was constantly makign changes I'd consider it, but once an engine/tranny/rear goes in there it stays until it dies.

I never thought about e-bay, last time I considered one they were under $80.

Just bring them the converter. The weight they added on is the stock style single one, sort of a rectangular shape that has the corners cut off it so it'll fit between the tabs of the flexplate.

I have one in storage that I used both times to make sure the weight wasn't in the way of the tabs while the tranny was out, rather then spend the time getting it back in and then finding out it didn't match up. If you don't have a flexplate kicking around see if they can sit on one there while you're at the shop. Better safe then sorry..

Nice user name

Because there is only one way the flexplate will bolt to the converter I think they'd probably use that as the basis of it. Thinking about the 318 converters I have there's no marking on them either to go by where the weight would go so that's what I'm assuming anyway.

There's a brand stamp or something on the flexplate. I forget now, but the weight either goes in the space that corresponds with the stamp or the one opposite it. If you want I'll check tomorrow. Sometime over the weekend I'm going to try to get some pics of my 4bbl setup and a few other things so I'll try to get one of a flexplate bolted to a loose tranny, it might help show where the weight goes or what it looks like or something.

Thumbs up Yeah if you could!

If you could check, that would be great. I would hate to get the wieght put in the wrong spot. It could possibly shake the motor/trans out of the car! dont you think?

I believe the weight goes in the same spot as the drain plug, but a trans shop should know for sure, or they should have an old 360 core converter laying around to check with.

Except after 77 or so there were no drain plugs on stock converters. I don't know about aftermarket ones, and if aftermarket ones do I wouldn't know if they're in the same spot as stock.. I've heard different answers about this. I just use stock converters so I couldnt' tell you.

I'll check tonight if it's not still wet out.

Angry Im surrounded by IDIOTS!

I spent all afternoon today calling every transmission shop around here, and I asked this very question to all of them; "I have a high stall converter from mopar performance, and I am going to put it behind a 360. It needs counter-wieghts welded to it because its an externally balanced engine. can you weld the wieghts on for me?"
And the answer is...............
"We dont do anything like that"
So I finally got the number of Dayco, They manufacter tourqe conv. I got ahold of the right guy and he will weld on the right wieght for $25. the only catch is its in cookville TN. 3hrs away. happy joy oh boy! Maybee I can get the nickel tour eh!

DOH!!! Maybe you could try calling some junk yards and ask them what they do when it comes to the weight when they're putting a 318 tranny behind a 360. I'll get that picture for you anyway and maybe that'll help or something... I guess I struck it lucky that a shop that'll do it was near me.

Wink cant win em all!

yeah sounds like you got quiite lucky. I think it has to do with the geographic location. I am originally from up north (great lakes area) so I must be ahead of the learning curve down here. HA!
Please dont take this personnally if you live in the south anyone, it is just a joke. I moved to Tn after my tour in the Marine Corps because I didnt want to put up with all the a$$holes in michigan.People are so much nicer and polite in East Tennessee.
Any way I will be going to Dayco transmissions tourqe conv shop this friday. I will start another post for anyone who has questions they want me to ask them.
