Default holley model 2300 500 cfm two barrel ?

i have that carb on my 318 with an edelbrock performer plus camshaft, no other build ups, yet somehow it is running real funky like, it wants to idle at 1350 and when you put it in drive or reverse it drops to around 700, big drop, so needless to say the tranny dosen't like this, and i am lacking power at the wheels, and when ever you floor it the engine bogs down bad...no matter how i tune or time it, i have it at 35 degrees total advance and about two and a half turns on the carb....i appreciate any advice

It sounds like a carb adjustment to me. Look at the choke setting and fast idle adjustment. The blades should be cracked open just a bit. I would suggest a 600cfm 4bbl. carb, Carter or Holley. Your choice.

I noticed its a 74 and you're in CA. Do you have EGR hooked up right now? I was having the same type of problem in my 318 with Holley 2bbl 2245. Turns out the carb I bought was a non-emissions carb, and that was what was causing my problem. The second I pulled the EGR line... presto, ran perfect.

Just something to check in case you haven't already.

In general, a two barrel carb will not run as smoothly as a 4 barrel carb rated at the same CFM. The two barrel has to have a lot bigger venturis to make the same airflow as the four smaller venturis on a 4 barrel. A 500 CFM 2-barrel will have the same size venturis as a 1000 CFM 4-barrel. A 1000 would be way too big for your 318, right? So it's gonna idle sorta like you have it overcarbed. My personal opinion would be to get a 500 4 barrel. Your low end mixture control will be much more precise. I am of course assuming that the 2 barrel and the 4 barrel are rated using the same test, i.e. the same pressure differential. I've heard that 2 barrels are rated using different tests than 4 barrels which makes it hard to compare.

Goose;

Your right in there rated @ 2 diff. pressures. The 4bbl is rated @ 1.5 I believe and the 2bbl @ 3.5.
Rateing the 2bbl. at the same level would yeild more cfm.
500 cfm would be better for a close to stock engine. 600 cfm for more performance.
