I put electronic ignition on my 71 dodge truck and it ran a few minutes and I shut it off. I timed it and adjusted carb while it ran. I took it out for a spin and it ran fine and when I tried to start it again it took a lot of carnks to start. Then I tried to start it again and no luck. I took the pink wire which is momentary 12 volts and spliced that in and I spliced the red wire and ran the wires to the dist and then to the control box. and I used the 4prong resistor too. Is it possible that the control box took a shit on me (used) or is it how I spliced the wires in wrong.
It is my first attempt at swapping out points so Im sure I just overlooked something. I just took two wire diagrams and figured out what looked right Thanks |

cageman;
Once I used an orange box that would start once then fail. I would take it off, look at it , wonder out loud and reinstall it. Then it would work. Next try it would not. Yes, it was defective. Sent it back and got another. No problems. Did you use the MoPar wiring harness? Instructions can be found in the ENG.'s book by MoPar. Would you like them. I'll try to post them. This way you can see. |

Yeah that would be cool or you could email them to me. i think I did it right it did run for a while. I used the wires out of a 75 pickup I made into a box trailer and it ran when i cut her in half. I had the control box as a spare for my racecar and it bounced around so that is probably why it failed.

You say you used the 4 prong resistor. Did you use the 5 prong ECU as well? You could have wired the wrong side of the resistor into the ECU. If you are using a 4 prong ECU and the 4 prong resistor, and wire the ECU to the wrong side of the resistor, it will burn up the ECU. I know you say you have looked at diagrams, but take a look: http://members.nbci.com/dustermocar/elecdualbal.htm
I wired electronic ignition in my 70 Charger from parts out back and have been running it for 2 years now with no trouble. |

I would swap in an MSD 6A and forget about the resistor.
