I pay $50 per surface to have things milled. My current engine had .032 off one deck, .041 off the other side. I also had .040 taken off each chamber and .036 from the Intake side of the heads. Total cost was $300. It adds up!!!!

we get $60.00 per pair of V8 heads to surface them up to .015 for iron, and .020 for aluminum. then its $6.00 per pair for every extra .005. to surface a V8 block, and correct the deck angles is $95.00. a V8 balance job is $185.00.

Cool

My 440 machine work was handled by Oddy/Perfection in Sarasota. These guys build Pro Mod motors for a living. They charged me $150 for a balance job, decking the block is $100, but what killed me was the price for fitting new Pro Gram main caps: $400. My total expenses for machining the block and crank came to, gulp... $1,400. Mind you, these parts are now dead nuts accurate and race ready, but I can't help but think if did it over again, I probably would have saved a little more and bought a Mega Block ($1,799).

I would recommend using a block tru fixture when decking. This fixture fits into the cam journals and the crank journals creating a flat surface to level the deck off of prior to decking. This insures that the decks are perpendicular to each other, as well as straight from end to end. The one I have seen used is from BHJ.
