is there a differnce as far as reliability or stength in these units? also what is the difference from a 741 and a 742? i know that a 489 is newer and a lot of people try to stay away from them cause they are supposed to harder to rebuild.

They are all pretty much the same. The main difference is in the pinion shaft diameter.
741=1 3/8 in. 742=1 3/4 in. 489=1 7/8 in. the obvious strong unit is the 489 with the largest pinion shaft diameter. The reason you may think that people stay away from this unit is that the surgrip was usually a cone type and was considered unrebuildable. I just read an article that shows how to rebuild these units and also know that some machine shops have had some succes at rebuilding them. All the suregrip units are interchangeable with all three cases. Even the 741 is really quite strong. I know of a duster running a 440/4 spd and has had no trouble. |

i think the reason some people stay away from the 489 case is because its preload is set with a crush sleeve not shims.under very high loads it will crush more, throwing off the preload setting.it can be set up with a spacer and shims like a 742 unit.the 741 unit is undesirable because its tougher to get gears for.in fact i think they are smaller than 8 3/4".
