Default Vibrating Duster

I have a 72 duster 318, stock. i have this annoying vibration which occurs at high RPMs. It can be in neutral or park and do this. Also while driving at higher speeds. Any ideas?

Do you have full exhaust? I am battling a similar problem in my '65. I put turn downs on and it helped a little. Next step is to either put it out the side or run it to the bumper. There have been a few posts about certain mufflers resonating worse than others. Could also be a motor balance issue, alot harder to fix.

Check your motor and transmission mounts, you may have one or more that have settled and allowed metal to metal contact somewhere, even internal to the mount, which makes it much easier to transfer vibration to the body of the car. I expect if the originals have never been changed, you've probably got more then one thats a little tired. They don't have to break entirely to be a problem, sometimes.

Check your universal joints on the drive shaft. I had one of mine go out, it vibrated at about 2500 rpm or so.

If it does it in neutral it has to be something thats currently rotating so that excludes driveshaft rearend etc,did it just start happening recently or has it always been there? I f it just started then look at your harmonic balancer as its a 2 piece and is pressed together with a rubber ring, after time the rings degrades and the outer portion rotates causing an imbalance in the bottom end.If its always been there then has the engine been rebuilt?or apart? then look for an incorrect balancer or incorrect torque converter, that is it may not have the correct weights on it other than that the trans coming apart could also be suspect,is it acting differently if so it might clue you in,hope that helps.......PRO...
