KB pistons
I'm replacing the stock rebuild pistons in my '70 440 Cuda. It's about 8.5 to 1 now with the pistons .105 down in the bore. I'D like to use KB pistons but can't decide between the .075 quench dome or the flat top. The heads are stock 906. Performer RPM intake, 750 Holley, headers, 727 2800 stall, 3.91 Sure Grip. I'll be useing Hughes HE3038 cam. I want the comp. to be 9.5 to 10.0. Ant thoughts? Thanks

Got KBs in my 383
KBs are a great choice for your 440. In mine with milling the heads .020" and using a steel head gasket (.020") I hit 10:1 compression which is where I wanted to be. A bit less I could have went with a composite gasket (.040") or even less I could have left the heads unshaved. You can 'adjust' your final compression this way. There is some handy CR math included with the instruction with the pistons, and also the KB website has some interesting resources.

I myself am a fan of flat top pistons. It gives me the flexabilty to swap heads with different amount of cc's without worrying about hitting a dome. For us small block guys, 10-1 is an easy thing to do with flat top zero deck piston. Even in the hole a lil bit is ok to.

The flat top pistons are much easier to install.
The quench dome pistons require alot more machine work to get them to fit correctly with the correct amount of "quench" clearance. Use the flat top pistons and drop a set of Edelbrock heads on it to get about 60+HP more than the 906 heads. |
