904 Upshift Question
What dictates at what RPM the trans will upshift at under full load with the use of the kickdown linkage? A friend of mine has a 904/340 and has to lift in order to shift into 3rd with his foot to the floor. The 1/2 shift is working properly. I assume that the kick linkage is only used as a pressure control and that the trans max shift RPM is dictated by a governor. Thanks for any help.

It is a balancing act between Governor Pressure and Throttle Pressure. In TF's the Throttle Pressure has more effect on the 2-3 shift than the 1-2. I recall one from years ago that had a 1-2 at @20 MPH but the 2-3 wasn't until @50. These were at 'normal' throttle. Adjusting the TV brought them both down but of course the 2-3 came down allot more than the 1-2.
It is also very possible that it is TRYING to shift but the Directs can't handle it at WOT. |

When driving the car at light throttle the upshifts are early. 3rd by 25 MPH. I remember having a simmilar problem when I changed from a Thermoquad to a Holley which is what happened to this car. The throw of the throttle linkage on the 2 carbs were different. I ended up drilling a new hole about 1/4" below the stock ball on the 90 degree pivot at the firewall and installing one of the ball ends from the Holley parts that came with the carb. This made the upshifts at higher RPM's at light throttle and almost pinned the trans lever at WOT. Another problem is that the friend of mine with the 904 is in Washington State and I am in Illinois. Thanks for the help.
