Ok, I just bought an 85' Laser w/ a 2.2 4 banger and I am having a little trouble with it. I got in it this afternoon after driving it home from work without error and it started fine until I backed out and it died. When I tried to start it, it just turned over and would not fire. After cranking on it a couple of times I figured out that I could not hear the fuel pump run when I turned on the key but I could be mistaken. Rather than run the battery down cranking it over I just turned the key off and on every minute or two and when I finally heard the pump run I cranked it over and it started. It died on me again about two blocks later and I did the same thing. I managed to get it to the garage and I ran the fault codes. Here is a copy of all the numbers that came up.
13 MAP Sensor Vacuum Circuit 13 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor signal did not change from start to run. 21 Upstream oxygen sensor voltage is shorted to ground. 21 Upstream oxygen sensor voltage is shorted to voltage. 21 Upstream oxygen sensor was slow to respond. 21 Upstream oxygen sensor stays at center. 21 Upstream oxygen sensor heater has failed. 21 Downstream oxygen sensor voltage is shorted to ground. 21 Downstream oxygen sensor voltage is shorted to voltage. 21 Downstream oxygen sensor was slow to respond. 21 Downstream oxygen sensor stays at center. 21 Downstream oxygen sensor heater has failed. 27 Injector No. 1 control circuit malfunction. 27 Injector No. 2 control circuit malfunction. 27 Injector No. 3 control circuit malfunction. 27 Injector No. 4 control circuit malfunction. 31 Evaporator purge flow monitor failure. 31 Evaporator solenoid circuit failure. 33 A/C Cut-out Relay Circuit 33 A/C clutch relay circuit. 33 A/C pressure sensor voltage is too low. 33 A/C pressure sensor voltage is too high. 33 A/C pressure sensor does not show a 5 volt reference voltage. 35 High speed fan control relay circuit malfunction. 35 Low speed fan control relay circuit malfunction. 35 Radiator fan control relay circuit malfunction. 42 No ASD relay driver output voltage at PCM. 42 Auto shutdown relay control circuit malfunction. 42 Fuel pump relay control circuit failure. 42 Fuel level sending unit voltage is too low. 42 Fuel level sending unit voltage is too high. 42 Fuel level unit does not change with change in milage. 52 Oxygen Feedback System is Rich. 52 Fuel system is too rich. 53 Logic Module. Looks to me like a candidate for the junk yard. Is this something simple or should I call a wrecker? ------------------ Thanks, Scott ------------------ Two wrongs do not make a right but three rights do make a left. http://www.geocities.com/goldenhazeduster/ |

It's not a candidate for the junk yard.Fix it!! First off the codes you listed are not all the correct codes. You have 10 "21" codes listed and code 21 is for 1 item not 10.It is a O2 sensor code, but the reason for the code is not all 10.Sounds possibly you may have a bad logic module, but the sure way is to get a diagnostic manual and go thru the flow charts.I'll have to look in my service manuals to see if I have info on this car,if I do I'll be more than happy to fax info to you.Contact me via e-mail cpd6200@yahoo.com

For what it's worth, my friend's 88 Daytona with the same engine as yours, did the same thing. He needed a new fuel pump, get ready to drop the gas tank. They do go without much warning, and one of the problems is, you'll get some pressure, making you think the pump is working. Problem is, the pressure won't be quite enough for the car to run, just back fire and attempt to start every now and then. I betcha you can prime the car with a cap full of gas, and it will run on that for a bit, be careful if you do this, in case of backfire. I think the fuel pump has just finally wore out.

Update: I erased all the fault caodes and started over. I have not had any further trouble but have rechecked the codes and now have a 21 or O2 sensor problem. I have also noticed that the fuel gauge seems to be going down quicker than i anticipated. Could this be related? Could the O2 sensor be the whole problem? How hard is it to replace? Where is it? how expensive? Thanks, Scott

The control will shut off the fuel pump if it does not get a timming signal.
My sisters Plymouth had a simular problem. The shutter wheel inside the distrubitor broke off the plastic mounting, so there was no ignition timming signal going to the computer. Also, make sure the timming belt din't break or jump a few teeth. |

Your o2 sensor should be on the exhaust manifold. If fuel gauge is dropping, check wiring for it. If the reading is accurate, check for fuel leak, because EFI has to maintain high pressure to work right, if there is leak, it would not have presure to run, maybe causing it to run for a little bit, then die. I would guess fuel pump, and if you replace it, make sure to replace filter as well.
