Question Used Neon Tips

I've heard mixed stories about these cars, some people have told me that it would take a big gun or lots of money to make them sell their neon, and other people have said they plan to shoot the guy who sold it to them. Most of the stories stem from the head gasket problem, is their a model year in the first gen neon where this is solved, or a statistically lower chance of happening?

There is a 97 5sp coupe i've been looking at with 53000 KMS (35000 miles i think). What should i keep an eye out for. There's also a 95 5spd 4 door base with new clutch, and axels that another guy is giving away. If a head gasket has been replaced once, with the new improved one on gen2's whats the chance it'll blow again.

well i have had experinces with a couple of them and they are good cars for the money. They are for the most part basic transportation, nothinig special unless you want to spend some money on them to make them faster. i've had nothing gone bad with mine for the time i owned it other than the head gasket. I'm not positive on the exact date but in late 98 Dodge finally decided to put the mls headgasket in all the neons so i would look for a later built 98 and definatly a 99. I bought a 97 with 50k miles on it and the head gasket was shot. the thing to look for is on the drivers side of the head underneath the exuast manifold check to see if there is any oil leaking thats where they all go. if it is wet then the headgasket is shot. IF done properly the new mls headgasket will never leak again.

Default love for the neons

I saw your ad and had to respond. The wife has a 95 neon sohc 4dr. base model. We've had 4 years and have only done brakes and the head gasket(80,000km). Well, I couldn't understand why the front left tire had so much wear. One night she was drinking, and the truth cam out,she raced everything that pulled up beside her. She'd kill me if I sold it on her. She realy wants a 5speed rt to really kick those cavaliers and rice beaters

Question

My brother has a Neon 98 model. Has done the head gasket thing. I work for Kenworth and work on transmissions and engines. I know everything has problems. My wife has a 2000 model Neon. Does anyone know if the head gasket is a problem with this model?

Yes in late 98 and all newer model year neons they put the mls headgasket on from the factory so you should not have to worry about it on your wifes car
