Default Retrofit Advice Needed

Hi, I just acquired a Cummins for my '84 D350 crew cab dually and wanted some advice on what to expect during the change over to the Cummins engine. I purchased a '91 D250 4X4 Cummins powered pickup with 147,000 miles. The price was right and I plan to begin the install immediately.

What I have for parts are: the hydraulic master and slave assembly(new), a good 5 spd 10 spline 2wd trans (New Departure), the donor truck and a Chrysler trained mechanic as a guide. He hasn't had a hand in a conversion though. Any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated. The donor trans is Getrag. Is the bell housing the same for the ND?

I am also looking into swapping the rearend gear and have been advised to change from my current 4.10 ratio to the donor's 3.5 ratio. They are both Spicer 70 series. Any thoughts on that? I have driven many miles with a Dodge Cummins combo, but it was always someone elses.

My final questions are what are the most common and productive modifications to the manual rack engines to improve the performance. I am willing to spring for the intercooler and twin snorkel intake.

The New Venture tranny and the Getrash have different bellhousings.
As for more power, you could try this pump mod(it's free) you'll gain quite a bit of Hp...and smoke.
Here's a place you could get tons of info from people have done these swaps

good luck with the swap

Default diesel

If that motor is from a 91 it would have a distributor pump on it. they are goood too though maybe not quite as good as the in line pump that uses a rack.
It is easy to fuel up, when you find the fuel screw, give it a 1/2 turn clockwise and try it. Also find out which turbo exhaust housing it has , I suggest a 16cm. It may have a 21cm which is slow to spin up. The smaller ones create the mid rpm torque that is wanted.

Thanks for the advice. I did take the time to do a search and reviewed other posts with respect to increased output. I haven't yet found any posts with respect to the retrofit. Have any of you tried or heard of doing this? (I just reread your post Rattlebox and will try the folks at the recommended website for info thanks.)

we are also looking into doing this....taking a 90 4x4 5spd cummins donor truck, and our 78 crew duallie, cutting them both, and puttin the 90 front and the 78 duallie rear together to make a 78 4x4 cummins 5spd crew duallie we want to use the 78 cab/interior tho, so there's lots of switching parts over...
