a-999 lockup trans/can lockup be eliminated?
I have 2 transmissions,an ' 86 and a '82 A-999,both out of 318 equipped m-bodies ,which both have the lockup converter...the 86 has the high stall unit too.Can the lockup feature be eliminated or delayed on either trans,or can I just use another non-lockup converter, and modify the trans any other way to make it not function. Will be using trans for bracket racing, and dont need the lokup feature. Or am I better off just using a 904 or 727 thats a direct swap in for these units...want to keep it simple and cheep guys!

lock-up converter
While I am not sure about the method of lock-up ( I think it was hydraulic control on those ),I do know that to switch to a non lock-up converter you will need to switch these parts. Converter, input shaft, and valve body.
I'd use a different trans! fox |

There's a pipe or plumbing in the valve body for the lockup. You can block this to eliminate it. That's the fix for a failing lockup clutch (transmission shakes and complains when it's trying to engage lockup).
