I'm putting a 392 hemi in a 1968 Coronet, and the clearance on the left side is really close to the steering box (standard, power is definately out). The problem is running headers. I've been told that I can solve the problem by swapping in a rack & pinion out of a K car, and get easier steering to boot! I have a friend that runs a wrecking yard, and he gave me the setup out of a K car, I just have to go pull it all out. My question is, has anyone out there ever done this type of swap, and what is involved? I would really appreciate any input on this!

I've been waiting for this! I've done a few Pinto R&P conversions on drag cars before & I've been slowly researching the rear steer R&P conversion in A & B-body. The *KEY* is the inner tie rod center to center matching the factory spec. If the inner tie rod pivots in the wrong relationship with everything else that moves in the suspension, the toe will change as the suspension moves up & down. That's not good... One of the Mopar mags did this in a B-body *YEARS* ago & needed to make a "drag link" (which was realy another center link) to move the inner tie rod ends inboard because "bump steer" made the car dangerous to drive. I'd *STRONGLY* suggest the MP Chassis book, it's worth it's weight in sweat & tears down the road & explains this & more better than I can.

So far, an Omni R&P looks like it's close to the right size for an A-body, but I haven't taken one apart yet to measure it.

Good luck & let me know how it goes!

I'm not sure if it will fit, But see if you can find a R&P out of an ACR Neon. That would help out more, cause ACR Neons come with a "firm feel" , and faster ratio. I think a 16:1 as to an 18:1
