I own a 64 Dodge Polara 500. I understand that in order to get rid of the ball and trunnion and maintain the console shift I will have to get a 65 tranny because thats the year they went to a u-joint. A later model trans would only work with a column or push button. I'm going to build a manuel valve body trans but don't want to have to deal with the console shift not working and I want to get rid of that ball and trunnion.

I have never heard of that. You can replace the whole transmission with a newer console transmission. There are plenty of them in b-bodies. You can just swap the ends of the tranny if you want to keep the correct numbers. I had a 64 880 custom with push button in it. I replace the "cv" joint 3 times before I got rid of the car. Supposedly you could just yank the bolt in piece and slide in a yoke.

the 65s used the same VB as your 64 console shift, with the provision for a park position on the rooster comb. You could change to a 65 O\P shaft and extension housing to get the slip yoke, they are totally different pieces than the ball and trunions. 66 and up O\P shaft and extension wont go in the earlier trannies, the bolt pattern on the back of the case is different.
