I thaught I had an extra set of axles, but today when I put the 3" wheel studs in, I discovered that my extra axles were 1" shorter. Can someone tell me about the different housing widths that used the 23 spline axles?

to my knowledge the only 23 spline dana axles are the ones found in a 68 or 69 b body, the housing if i remeber right is 55.5 inches flange to flange.we are talking about a dana 60 right?

Question

The Hemi Dart had a narrower dana,I have one in a 80 crew cab thats really narrow due to the fact it was a highrailer for the local railroad before I got it and was special ordered. Is it possible that these axles were cut down?

Heck I dont know, whatever they put in an 80 3/4 ton.Its a truck type with the exposed axle ends,8 hole pattern wheels. It is way narrow though.I replaced a wheel bearing last year and it seems it was a fine spline-didnt count them.

i think thats a full floater your describing,it will still work, just a little haevier than the light duty dana, but, you need to measure from flange to flange and see if its too narrow, the exposed portion would have to be cut off and mopar ends welded on,so make sure it wont be too narrow.they are probably 30 spline axles.thats my guess anyhow.

Well actually I am building a 96 Dakota 4x4.But its not going to need a dana with just a small block. This differential is coming out when I switch in the 3.54s sometime this winter, its a 4.10 sure grip with a hundred thou plus on it but has never made a bad noise yet.I will measure it later today and let you know what the width is.

The 23 spline axles were used in '66-'69 Dana 60 passenger cars, the '66 and '67 are narrower than the '68-'69 so the axles are shorter. The '68-'69 dimensions are below:

L shaft= 29-21/32"
R shaft= 28-9/32"

From books, the best I can tell, these axles are from an early Pro-Stock housing that was 52.5" wide. The 52.5" housing is now called the Super-Stock housing as the Pro-Stock housing was narrowed to 44" in 1972.
The short 23 spline axles are not cut down. On the 23 spline, the spline has a larger diameter than the axle shaft.
The dana in my Dart is from a 1966 Charger and the extra axles I have are even shorter. I am building up another rear for my 66 Mustang that will use the extra short 23 spline axles, along with a suregrip power-lok in a cut down truck housing. Sorry about building a Mustang!

i just did axles on my 68rr and flange to flange on dana 60 housing was 55 1/8,axle flange to flange was 60 1/8. drivers side is 29 3/4, pass side is 28 3/8. you can order them from Moser , which are custom alloy that are 3 times stronger than stock. with axle bearings pressed on and non adjustable retaining plates ran about $400 to my door step
good luck
george

p.s. when i put my new axles in one seemed to be too long. i used a thin cutting disc on my grinder and cut off a 1/4 inch. this fixed problem. mopar has an adjustable retaining plate on passenger side
