Head gasket thickness
How do I find out what year Mopar changed the headgasket thickness in a 318 from .020" to .035". My motor is a 1987. Mopar Performance is calling for a .020 gasket, while the parts department at the local Dodge dealer is calling for a .035-.038. The big question is.....Do I shave my heads .020 to get them back where they need to be if a .020 headgasket was used or do I leave them so as to not run into pushrod problems???

The dealer is better equiped to tell you what your engine came with. MoPar Performance is giong by older engine specs. Go with the dealer. The .015 won't kill ya anyway if it was built within specs.

you wouldn't happen to have an old gasket would you?
even if you make the wrong choice.. either you are going to have more lash, which I've heard isn't to bad of a thing if its not excessive..(for making more power), or you can shim the rocker shafts. back to where they need be. I'm thinking the .020" gasket, is the steel shim, and the others are a composite. so if you can remember what you pulled out of it, you should have your answer. |

good answer!
The lash shouldn't be any trouble though. BUT Better to be where you were! |
