Racing a Durango???
A friend of mine's mom just bought a new Durango. I think its a 1999. Not sure, but she bought it new and its bone stock. It has the 5.2L, 8 in it. He keeps egging me on to race him. I think i'll be wasting my time racing him. What you think? How much do they weigh and do I have a chance or will I get smoked?

you'll probably take him. weight difference considering you have a extended cab means you weigh in the upper 4000's and the durango is probably 4500. Your mods should even it out or give you a bit extra on the durango.

Looking at your mods, I think you'll take him. You probably won't "beat him like a red-headed stepchild", but you'll probably take him by a car length or 2.
Oh, and I used to hang out with a kid who really was a red headed stepchild. He HATED that phrase, so of course the rest of us would use it all the time. |

My truck weighed in at 5180 with me, no spare tire, speaker box and a full tank of gas. I think I got him though

What gears are in the Durango? 3.55 or 3.92? Is he wantin' to race the 1/4 mile or down the interstate?
I had an '01 durango, 4.7, 3.92 gears, 4x4...that thing would smoke any ram I've ever driven. But with the 5.2, the dungaroo won't be that fast. |

its a 5.2L yea you might get smoked with a lighter weight 4.7L for sure.

I think you will take him, my best run in the 1/4 mile is 16.7 and mine isn't stock. A little more drag coming from the transfer case and bigger tires on the Durango.
BTW, I go over 5k pounds too, no dodge truck is light. |

I think you will take him by a couple car lengths.
Just race with a 1/4 tank of gas to be sure If he has 3.92 gears it may be a little tougher but I would guess it's only 3.55 Weights should be close, mine as I've stated before is 4920lbs without anybody in it and 1/3 tank gas. |

If it's a 4.7 2wd you don't stand a chance. If it's a 5.2 4wd then you might have him. I've had 2 durango's a 5.2 4wd and 5.9 RT - When I picked up the Ram I had a 2001 4.7 as a loaner and it screamed..

Im pretty sure it has the 3.55 open rear. Whats so special about the 4.7L durango's? Arent they like 245hp? Are they really that fast? And thanks guys for all the responses!!

Go For It!
I wouldn't walk away from a good race unless there are negative variables to consider.
If you both meet on a clear dry stretch of open highway, then I can say without hesitation, "Stop Talking and Just Smoke His ASS!". Now, on the other hand, if your thinking of racing in your neighborhood, then don't do it. I race all the time. However, I race on the Highway or quick light-to-light dashes to 5o mph. So, if this is the case, GO FOR IT!!! My 2 Cents... ...and Happy Yard-bird... Anthony |
