serious diff problems
ugh...just blew my rearend (i'm pretty sure)
75 valiant 318...stock everything doing donuts in a parking lot...etc...shut her down to check on everything...all was good till i started it up again. super loud clunking noise from the rearend... anyway i'm pretty sure it's trashed so i need a new one. other than an a-body 8 <3/4> what would be the best rearend to get? there's a 9 <1/4> unit from a monaco in the paper...would that fit after shortening?...and if so how much would a shop generally charge for that? anyway thanks in advance......i'm feeling pretty bummed right now |

LOL anything bigger will fit in a smaller spot when made to fit. A 9 1/4 will hold up fine. There maybe a driveshaft issue to deal with. The nose of the rear, where the driveshaft bolts up, maybe a different length. It will be small, but, it may cause a problem.
Then again, maybe not. |

The 9 1/4 is longer than the 8 3/4 by a bit I think. It is a few inches longer than the 7 1/4 you likely have now. I've put a 9 1/4 in a 5th ave. I had to find a driveshaft and move the perch mounts. It was wider but ok in my application. Yours would need shortening and that may get expensive. Might be cheaper to find a rear for an A-body.

Why wait forever for that 8 3\4 rear end, the besr approach for a 318 car would be the 8 1\4 rear end it's strong enough for your application, easier to find, has the large bolt pattern and the 10x2 1\2" brakes. The drive shaft will also probably fit if you score it from an 8 cyl car. The 10x1 3\4 brake shoes are very difficult to find for the 8 3\4 so you either convert to the big bolt pattern or suffer in agony.
