Thumbs up 440 w/ Viper 6 speed

I just purchased a Viper 6 speed to put behind my 69'-440 going in my 41Dodge Coupe. It's getting an Aspen front clip and A body 8 3/4 rear end. Any ideas or problems with this set-up? All suggestions / help is appreciated.

Thumbs up

I 've been thinking of a 6 speed behind a big block dodge.I'm also really interested in how these 2 bolt up. Especially the clutch and pedals. I belive they have a hydraulic clutch. My chevy buddie put one in his camaro. What alot of work it was. Still I'm still considering one for a vintage mopar. Keep us posted, thanks the toolman

got a question for you.. I was looking into getting the viper 6-speed, but came across a t-56 from an LS-1 motored car first. is the viper bellhousing a direct bolt up for the small block or big block? I even called mopar tech, they couldn't anwser, and called a viper performance shop.. nobody knew.

i know its not a 6 speed but that company i think is called Kiesler makes a "bolt up" 5 speed, comes witha drive shaft and you can use a pistol grip too. they advertise in all the mopar mags

jleilich the Keisler unit is nice but also sort of out of my budget. Besides the Viper has 5th and 6th overdrives. 6th has a ratio of 1.0 to .5, which should make for a good cruizer.

see them at http://www.keislerauto.com/

I've talked with Richmond tech guys about adapting their 6-spd to a big block mopar. Apparently it will take bellhousing, tranny tunnel, driveshaft, clutch, .. etc modifications, but it isnt all that impossible.

From my understanding The viper uses the same bolt pattern to the block as the Small Blocks. So essentually you could very easily bolt it up to a small block. Now A big block would require a different bell housing or an adapter. Currently that I know of there is not a bell housing for the Viper 6-speed to the Big blocks. This would mean a current Big Block bell Housing will have to be modified to bolt to the Viper Six Speed if it s possible.

Christian

Please keep us posted on what you find out.

BTW how much did you pay for the 6-speed? If you dont mind me asking?

for the big block ,, you couldnt use a lakewood bell housing or something,, and what do you mean by modify it, do you mean drill new holes or actually weld or take out some stuff..?????

well that would be a cool swap but i have a truck. that means NOT cool shifting. the first v-10 was supposed to literally be a 360 that was hacked and slashed so my guess is it would work. and i saw some where where they adapt a TF-904 (only has small block pattern, duh!) to big blocks. maybe the same adapter would work on the 6 spd?

you can just get a 1/2 adapter plate that is goign to mate a small block tranny to a big block, and then a matching 1/2 spacer that is going to go between the crank and flywheel. this second piece is also going to have to have a provision for a pilot bearing.

the advantage to using a 6-speed from a LS-1 motored car (98 or newer), is the length of the input shaft. you don't have to use the adapter to move the flywheel. just the 1/2 adapter for the tranny to the block. that should work the same for a big block or small block. just need a spacer that is going to mate a powerglide to a big block or small block, and most of the rest is going to be a piece of cake.

still wish i had the viper tranny though

The lakewood housing between the Richmond 6 speed and a big block crankcase would need to be drilled and adapted. The tech guy didnt mention welding/cutting to adapt them.

I contacted Lakewood and was given the phone number of their R&D deparetment. They will have this exact bellhousing ready for the market by next summer. I was also given the opportunity to have one specialy made at a reasonable cost. Wade from Lakewood was really helpful.

The Viper trans definatly WONT bolt up to a small block. I had a chance to slide the two together on the ground and while the patern looks the same the Viper is at least 2" bigger diam. As far as the big block I have no idea.

Does someone have the different Big Block bolt patterns?
The bellhousing bolt pattern for the Viper I do have, so comparison is possible.

Keisler doesn't make the transmission that they sell. They are Tremec transmissions.

The Viper 6 speed is also a Tremec and is also used in the corvette. You can get the correct bellhousing from Keisler. Lakewood may also have the correct bellhousing.

while the viper is a t-56, there are differences between that and what is used in the vette's. specifically the input shaft, and some other that I'm not sure of.
