1970 Chevelle?

I'm on another board and someone posts that a 1970 Chevelle with a 454 or 396(sic) is the "greatest and fastest muscle car of all time". His FACTS- 12.00 ET at 120MPH. Dead stock.
Not one to laugh out loud... I post I think the 454 LS-6 was lucky to test in the 13's in their day at around 100MPH, and 14's were a 396 Chevelle's territory at around 95MPH.
He says I'm full of shit, wrong, and his statements are not his opinion but FACT!
Fastest car EVER until that time bone stock.

My reaction? I posted test results of a 1970 Chevelle- the fastest road tests I could find, and their source- Motor Trend and Muscle Car Review-

The source?
The Great Book of MUSCLE CARS - by the auto editors of "Consumer Guide", Publications International, Copyright 1990.
The car magazine "Muscle Car Review" tested a 1970 Chevelle with a 454 LS-5 and 3.31 gears.
Quarter mile time? - 14.20 seconds
Quarter mile speed? - 100 MPH
The magazine "Muscle Car Review" also tested a 1970 Chevelle 454 LS-6.
Quarter mile time? - 13.75 seconds
Quarter mile speed? - 98.46 MPH
Go to the library and take a look. They are the FASTEST times for stock Chevelles that I could find, I found LOTS of others, but not as flattering.
Car and Driver magazine road tested a 1969 Chevelle with a 396/325 HP and 3.55 gears in their January 1969 edition.
Quarter mile time? - 14.41 seconds
Quarter mile speed? - 97.35 MPH

What do YOU think?

I don't know what was the fastest muscle car of all time was. My guess would be some of the early factory drag cars from mopar. The Ford 427 Thunderbolt was fast and the the 66 427 cobra.

I would not doubt the chevelle could run low 13's and mabey high 12's. My bone stock except tires 70 Z28 went 13.98@102 smog pump and all.
The 70 Z28 was rated at 360 hp
The ls5 was rated at 360 hp
The ls6 was rated at 450 hp

Hey JD, what a great list!! Of particular interest to me was #'s 4 and 5. I thought it would have been the other way around. Maybe if the Cuda would have had the 4.10 gear as well. At any rate, I presume all these cars were run on street tires. The ultimate (and most accurate, in my opinion) test would be to run them factory stock except for a set of drag slicks.......what an awsum Saturday afternoon that would be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A guy in my hometown builds Cobra replicas and of the two he has taken to the track,

1. 375 horse 302, it ran 13.20's

2. 425 horse 390, it ran 13.00's

So, I cant really believe 12.20, unless a lot of mods and alot of VHT and slicks!

Another guy has a LS-6 Chevelle with 2 inch Hookers, 850 Holley, Victor Jr., Comp roller cam, 4.10, 3500 stall it went a best of 12.25 at 109.

As far as Vipers, at the Nationals it seems like most of the stock ones are around 12.80-13.20?

For sure it would have to have gears and slicks. All those times were posted on stock tires I bet. Can you imagine trying to hook up 450 fpt through skinney bias ply tires?

It would be real interesting to see those cars run on some decent rubber. The tires they had back then, it is amazing they went as fast as they did. As for the Cobra, the '66 had a dual quad 427 in it, and they were somewhere around 500 horse in a Cobra. One of the Mopar rags ran a Viper at Union Grove a couple years ago and got a 12:07@120mph, supposedly stock. If we include Cobras and T-Bolts, we gotta include the BADDEST cars ever to come out of a dealers showroom, (wink wink) the '68 SS Darts and Barracudas!

Lets not forget the the Cobra was not really a stock car. If 12.00 was its best then the 1964 Ford Thunderbolt that was sold by Ford to Members of the Ford Racing Council for $1.00 to beat the Hemi's was actually faster in 1964 it went 11.76@122.78.

Now lets forget the great cars by MOPAR:

1963 Dodge 426 Ramcharger 12.00@117mph (Muscle Car Review 1987)

1964 Dodge 426 Hemi 11.40@125 (Muscle Car Review)

1967 Dodge Coroner R/T 13.86@98.36 (Muscle Car Review)

1968 Dodge Charger R/T 13.54@101 (Muscle Car Review)

1963 Plymouth Belvedere w/425 Max Wedge 12.69@111.97 (Hot Rod)

If these cars were run on todays tire technology and not the crappy bias tires available then, the times would be better.

I'm glad to see you found the times for the early Factory Drag cars from Mopar 63 and 64. I was looking for them but I couldn't find any info. True the Cobra was built for road racing. 72Bird you have to remember that a 5.0 is not even in the same area code of horse power as the 427. And as for the 390 I wouldn't even spend the money to hop one up. Its a good truck engine but its not a race engine. The 427 was a factory race engine. Ford had three different sets of heads for it and most of them came with dual quads. The 427 that came in the cobra was well over 500hp.

40Coupe,

The statement about a 5.0 may be true, except it wasnt a 5.0, technically maybe, but, I didnt see any fuel injection on it!!!! 390, no it isnt the best engine, but in a car that light I dont really think it makes a sh!!. You can make good power with a 390. Maybe not a RACE engine but HP is HP. And no, I'm not a Ferd fan. And that is my .02 worth.

Another thing you gotta remember about those Cobras. They were so small, they actually had to section in a piece to make the cars wide enough for a 427. We visited Shelby's joint out in Vegas last year, and it's amazing how small those cars really were.

Look at this,in the top 11 cars JD listed(I dont consider a shelby a production car in the 60s) for us, 4 are mopars,3 of the 4 are 426 hemis,2 b bodies 1 e body, these 3 cars outweigh there counterparts and have a smaller displacement and were made for the public and bought by the public and driven daily, not like some that are listed which only 100 or so where made.Keep in mind that a 426 Hemi was a tempermental tuning beast,it required weekly attention,I have beaten a 69 Charger with a 426 with a 69 RR 383 4 spd because it needed tuned, these cars all could knock on High 12s door with street tires which means today they can run mid 12s or better,as for 454 chevelles with the LS-6 how many did they make?...less than 20,that doesnt sound like a production car to me...there good for 1 thing,As triumph the wonder dog says:there good to poop on!!!...PRO..

Some people try to discount the 427 Cobra as something other than a Musclecar. If you look at the lbs/horsepower or straightline performance it's pretty hard to deny. Sure, it's a low production specially built vehicle but so were the A-990 cars, Max Wedge Lightweights, Super Stock Barracudas and Darts. The 427 Cobra is an awesome car.(even if it is a FORD)

MUSCLECAR REVIEW magazine published their first list of the 50 Fastest Musclecars in the November 1985 issue. Here's an explination of how they came up with the list. An exhausting search of 60's era automobile magazines was made. After collecting as many drag test results as they could find, the list was compiled. To prevent a small number of cars from dominating the list, similar engine/body combinations are grouped together with the best performance numbers used to represent that combination. [for example, 5 different 69-70 HEMI B-Body drag tests were found] The times shown are for cars in stock condition. Add in the cars that gt listed and Mopar is well represented in the top 20. It stands to reason though, Mopar was by far the most prolific manufacturer of factory race cars during the "Musclecar Era".

The '70 LS-6 Chevelle is right up there but certainly not the fastest.

Does anyone remember that the test cars usually weren't in stock condition. Many of them used slicks and headers, engines were at least blueprinted supertuned for performance and often even modified internally. The best magazine ET's are not typical for that kind of out of the dealer stock car in anyway. Hot ROD has done some reviews of those old test drives interviewing the authors etc, and all have agreed that they 'cheated' back then.

I didn't realize that the Cobra weighed 2180 lbs and couldn't break 12.00, it was actually a pretty sorry performance. The rest of the cars weighed at least a 1000lbs more, if the rest of the field was put in a 2180lbs car I bet a lot of them would have been in the 9's or 10's. A Cobra was nothing more that a AC Bristol stuffed with a 427. Put a 273 HiPo in Mini Cooper!

Yeah, I read an article (I think it was in Musclecar Review) by a guy who worked for Pontiac in '73. He was talking about how the '73 SD455 T/A was a "Ringer". It had 12-1/2:1 pistons in it, cam, and ported heads and manifolds! In the magazine test though, it was stock. Those car companies could be such jokesters! Dennis

My personal favorite is still the '71 Car Craft when they did the 440+6 Road Runner vs. the LS-5 454 Chevelle. They ran them stock, then built them up and the RR was faster stock than the Chevelle was built up. (The RR was optioned better to begin with, though)
