Default cam advice/experience (again)

Anyone had any expereience using Comp Cam 305/525" in a 440? How does it compare to MP 292/509 for power, driveability, and idle quality?........djs

We run the 509 in a 440+.030 and the idle quality is very poor .We had to really work to get the car to run at 700-900 and not stahl. The 305 comp is even rougher at idle due to the 106 intake center line.I should have advanced the 509 2 degrees to help the idle quality .In my estimation I would rather run the Hughes 238/244 cam which is just slightly less duration but lots more lift .540 which I think would be a better trade off.

Thanks HOLESHOT. I've found the 509 to have a pretty good idle at about 1,000 rpm, but you have to have a loose converter so it dosen't stall the engine when put into gear. We use a 3500 stall which lets it idle about 800 rpw in gear. Anyone else have any input?........djs

hello, I also have the 509 cam, but in a 383. It to is adv. 2 degrees. It is in my challenger which is just mostly a street car and idles at 850-900 rpms with no problem.I'm very happy with this cam, and has helped given me high 12 second time slips with not much else done to the motor(basic bolt on's). Thanks

djswwg, just out of curiosity, are you still looking at the Isky grinds and comparing them to these or is Isky out all together now. Have a good one.......Dave

Hi Dave. Actually, I've checked every cam outfit I can find on the net, and as far as I can see the Isky grind will likely be my final choice. However, I want all the input I can get from all the "brains" at Moparchat before I make a decision. I wish I could chat with someone that has used the cam I'm considering before buying it. By the way, did you get my fax ok? Plumebody, thanks for the input, the 509 is a terrific cam. Now I want something a little more hairy. By the way folks, you might want to check out Lazer Cams- a guy running 11.42 in a 455 Firebird 4-speed (full street) turned me on to them. They seem a little pricey though. Anybody else? Pro, you out there?

509 cam here.Rate of lift and duration better than cutting duration and adding lift on my program.BTW advancing cam doesn't help idle, that's cuz I did it!

I have had very good luck with isky cams..My roadrunner has a isky 296 505 hyd cam..I feel that is a much better cam than mopars 296 509...with the 509 the power brakes wouldn't work but there fine with the 292 505 isky cam.....djswwg let us know how it works out ....Lee....

Lee, thanks for the input. The Isky I'm considering is 304 dur. (256@ .050") and .525" lift. Like I said previously, I just want a little more snort than the 292/509, but I don't want to lose drivability either. I'm hoping this cam will take me to 11.50's/118mph range. The car has gone 11.72@113.5. Also Lazer has a very similar grind, 305dur.(255@ .050") and 525 lift. I don't have power brakes or any other vacuum accessories so that isn't a concern either. Let me know if you have any info on these cams. Did the 296 Isky make as much power as the 292 MP?.....meepmeep,sorry man, you lost me, explain more fully please.....djs

Biggrin 509 cam

just for my two cents worth. I ran the 509 in my 440 with 9:1 compression, degreed in at 2 advanced. Idle was not bad but choppy. I liked it. It got me a best of 12.79 @ 105. My coronet weighed in at 3650. Not including 205 lbs for me. Hope that helps.

Cool

I've been running the 509 for 10 years and am very happy with it. It idles at 800 rpm with 38* advance at 650rpm. Truck weighs 3550 and is equiped with a 9.2-1 440. Best et's to date 1.63-60ft. 7.70-1/8 12.20@106.88 uncorrected. It also gets 10-10.5 mpg on the street with 4.56 gears and 10" converter. With good air it should run 11.90's.

Does anyone remember when the magazines would do a real comparison of parts? They're afraid to insult their advertisers I guess. I'd love to see track testing of several cams in a 440. There was a test touting the Hughes Cams, But they didn't compare v. MP 509 or Any other name brand cam -chickenshit IMO.

BTW, Comp Cams has a press release on their new Extreme Energy Hi Lift Chrysler Cams. (I guess they figured out we don't use no Chevy lobes here.) No lift/duration specs though. And those part numbers aren't in the catalog. Trade secret I guess.

SpeedSleaze, I went to Comp Cams website and sent them an email asking for all the info on the 3 new big block cams. They sent back all the info the next day. They look alright on paper, but I still think I'm going to go to an Isky from my MP 292/509. That or a Lazer grind...................djs

djswigg I havent tried the isky either, but I dont feel that they are are a bad cam . I feel that the 256@ .050 will make your car less streetable with little power gain. A fello racer tried the comp cams 305 ,525 /256 @ 050 and didnt like it on the street at all. I too run the 509 and want a little more grunt. My hunt has led me to a Hughes solid HE 5056 or a HEV 5056 These are solid cams whitch are known to be more streetable than there comparable size HYD., with more power. Also I noticed that the cam timing events are almost exactly that of the 509 but with more lift .They basicly seemed to copy the 509,s timing events. As an example, my 509 installed at 106, the intake opens @20* BTDC ,closes@48*ABDC. The 5056 installed @ 108 iINTAKE opens @20* and closes@50 The exhaust is similer. The 509 is old tech but its timing events are still being used but with more lift. I love the 509 , but I want to try one of these new tech clones! Sport! Dodge Sport 509/ 10.91 Dodge SportHEV 5056/????

Sport; thanks for the input. I could do that but I want to run hydraulic. It's easy for the cam grinders to get more lift with the same dur. with a mech. cam. But I don't want the expense of converting to adjustable valvetrain. If I ever do that I'll go roller and get the biggest bang for the buck. I think if I go with the Isky or Lazer I'll use a Rhoads or Crane lifter so low speed driving isn't too silly. Speedsleaze, I allready deleted the reply from Comp. Cams. Sorry. Just go to their website and pop them off an email; I'm sure they'll send you the info too......................djs
