Question

I am trying my first rebuild on a 383 superbee. I am on a strict budget so a trip to the machine shop is out of the question.
It will only be a basic hone & rebuild.
My question is, when I take the heads off, can I re-use the existing steel-shim gasket(.020") instead of the composite(.040")
when I put the heads back. I dont want to loose compression and I cant afford to have the block decked the .020 inch difference. If I can re-use the steel, what is the best type of sealant to use with it?

No you cant reuse them but....you can buy new ones for about $22 a pair, also did you know you can mill your heads .030 and gain .5 in compression w/o any intake surfacing? its an easy way to gain some ponies and it cost $40 or so for the pair...PRO..

If your looking for a good deal on Fel-Pro gaskets, the whole set from summit is $48.69 (FEL-KS2110), but it does not have the valley pan (intake manifold gasket.)
Felpro also sells a Valley pan gasket that has the exhaust heat crossover blocked, but I forgot the number for the gasket.

dualaxle, I can understand that if the money is not there, its just not there. But I sincerely hope that you will rethink this rebuild you're talking about doing.
At the very least buy a new set of steel shim head gaskets for reassembly, and spray them on both sides with copper sealant before you lay them on.
