I am looking to buy a 'Cuda or a Challenger. It will be a 4 speed. I was wondering which engine, besides a hemi, to get. Tell me which one you recommend and why. Also, what years of Cudas have the round taillights? Thanx.

I personally like the 340 but any big blocks are good too. 318 360 are ok, but lack power

The 66-69 Barracudas also had round headlights (ha ha). Engine size is a matter of preference. Go small block (340/360) for a preference in handling. Go big block (383/440) for a preference in straight line performance.

Yeah 72 and later had the 4 round tailights, and that limits you to 318 or 360 for 72-74 or 340 72 and 73.Id find a 360 car because theyre rarer and have more HP potential because of more cubes, they made a few 74 360 4 spd cars...PRO...

3000gt, The E Bodies have round tail lights from 71-73. I don't know why FishyAbody said they are round from 66-69 because my barracuda is a 68 and the tail lights are "C" shaped on the 67-69 A Bodies. As for an engine, thats a matter of what you want. Personally for a sb I'd go 340 or 360, but if your looking for a bb I'd go 426 or 440.

round tailights started at 73. 1973 had 318 and 340 for engine choices, and 74 had 318 or 360. The 340 or 360 can be modified easily for 400hp performance. Keep in mind that other things than just the motor need upgrading when you do this. Also, big blocks can be put in the cuda with some work, since they were designed for them.
Which is best? I'm happy with the small block, as I don't plan to tub it. The stock powertrain and chassis can handle the 400hp. If you switch to the big block, you may need to replace your driveshaft, torsion bars, and will definitely need new induction and exhaust. Also, the big block can twist your frame pretty badly, so frame connectors are a good idea. The big block takes up so much room underhood that plugs are hard to reach, and the wires must be carefully routed. Sound like I'm happy with the small block? Yep, and since I street drive it, it's plenty fast. So what if a big block can take me by a car length? That's only a couple of tenths! |

However the '72-'74 'cudas still used the earlier K-member so they are ready for a BB swap. There is no replacement for displacement, but maybe I would opt for a SB too with a four speed. For parts longevity, if not for any other reason.

Actually round taillights started in 72.
Thanks djs, I'm looking for 70-71 4 spd. Sounds like a sweet car though. |
