Default A body 8-3/4 Questions

ok, i scored a 8-3/4 rear out of a 69 Dart GTS that has 323 gears. It's for the 68 valiant 2 door car.But the 7-1/4 plates won't work right? i heard that the B body 8-3/4 shock plates and U bolts are the same as the A body ones. is this right? Also, will the 7-1/4 E-Brake cables work or do i need 8-3/4 e brake cables? thanks for any help.

The 7 1/4 axle tubes are smaller than the 8 3/4 tubes. The 8 3/4 tubes are a 3 inch tube. I got mine off soem big Chrysler in the wreckign yard...just measure the gap. It was off a 8 1/4 if I remember correctly. Just get the U bolts and the shock plates. As for the brake cables, it varies from car to car. Some are different lengths. I ended up pulling mine off the 7 1/4 to swap on the 8 3/4. Just check them.

You can use shock plates from any vehicle that has a 8 3/4 axle, I heard that the Dana plates are the same.

The e-brake cables will work if you can get them out of the original axle without breaking the fingers. I used a deep well socket (I believe 14 mm) to crush down the fingers enough to remove the cables from the backing plates.

You will have to use a shorter drive shaft. The 8 3/4 axle is about 2" longer than the 7 1/4. You may also have your current drive shaft shortened and rebalanced.

Did this swap on my 68 cuda. Good luck. It is worth it when you are done.

I bought a set from Mark Nixon that I'm using for the 8 3/4 I'm putting in my 68 Valiant. He found me on the ******* board.
