What's the easiest way to identify an 8 3/4, or any Mopar rearend for that matter?

To identify a 8 3/4 rear;
Stand at the rear bumper and look under.... How many bolts are on the rear cover... If its zero, then its an 8 3/4. A good book to have is the Chassis book by MOM MoPar. There, inside are pics & good descriptions, diamentions..>SP> and other usefull info. |

does anyone know how to identify a 489 or the 741 case? what are the differences? which ones are better?

68,the casting #'s are on the drivers side of the center section they are the last 3 #'s
741 is a light duty center section and tuff to find new gears for. 742 and 489 are a toss up.these are the heavy duty units |
