What is the proper way to diagnose a charging system on a 1974 Plymouth Duster? How many volts and amps should the charging system put out? Will a dead cell in the battery effect alt output?

Have you tried hooking up a voltmeter? Do you have electronic ignition? According to the manual, You should be putting out between 13.3 and 14.4 volts, depending on ambient temperature (the hotter the temp the lower the volts). I'm no electronics expert but if you have a dead cell the alternator is going to be charging excessively in an effort to get your battery juiced up.

Check the battery volts, car not running should be above 12. Start the car and check it again, should be 13 or 14 volts. Don't forget that an alt. could put out good volts but no amps. Put a amp meter on her and make sure the alt. is putting out amps. A battery should stay up for a long time. If you go out the next day and your battery is below 12 volts, it's either a bad batt. or something is drawing it down. Do a draw test on it.
good luck

Thanks for the input from the only two that would reply. I was hoping to hear from a few certain members in regards to the alt system, but they did not tackle this question, and for good reason. Thanks to the only two that would.

Hey Warren, I believe 14.2 volts is perfect. I always caveman it by taking off one of the bat terminals while the car is running. If the motor speeds up a bit, it's charging. If you smell acid, it's overcharging. If it has a bad cell the Battery's gonzo. Get one of those do das to check each cell. Load test will tell also.
