Biggrin Cheap 383, what do you think?

I figure it will cost me about $2000 to put a big block in my '70 Challenger. It will be about a 75 HP gain with about a 90 lb gain.
This is the motor I plan on putting in
'71 383 short block(8.7:1 CR)
'516 heads with standard valve job and bigger ex valves installed
Summit cam(the bigger one, 226 dur at 50?)
1 3/4 headers
2 1/2 in exhaust
Torker intake
3310-2 Holley carb(750 VS)

I want to beef up a 727 trans with 3500 converter(TCI 9 1/2 in?) Hemi shift lever, hiperformance shift kit from B&M and some other mods. Then I'll have 3.23s(plan on changing to 3.73s) and 25 in tires. Sound good? The race weight would be around 3650 lbs.

Sounds good to me. Mill the heads .040 to get your comp up. Have the intake shaved at the same time - .012 off each side of intake for every .010 off heads.

The summit cam should be fine. If I had the extra $200 bucks, I'd go with a Xtreme Comp. Another $100, and I'd go with a Hughes Cam.

My mild 383 pushed my Super Bee to a 12.79 in street trim.

The only thing I can add is go with a dynamic (Frank Lupo) converter.

Also, when you choose gears, for an 8 3/4 you choices are 3.23, 3.55, 3.91, 4.10, 4.30, ect. I don't think they make a 3.73 for them.

Good luck!

Prostock - 3.73's for Mopar 8-3/4 is available through Randy's Ring and Pinion.

Fury - you also address your traction. You WILL have problems with the 25" tires. Cheap way - pinion snubber and homemade spring clamps.

Your setup sounds almost identical to mine, my 383 has the "9:1" pistons in it with the 516's and 1.74 exhausts. I have the Hedman 1-3/4 inch hedders, Weiand action plus intake, and Holley 3310 carb. My cam's a 218@.050 and .458 lift. I run dual 2-1/2 with crossover. The car's a '69 RR, 3570 lb w/o driver and 1/2 tank of gas. I run 3.23's and 275/60-15 TA's. Stock converter. I have a street/strip shift kit in the tranny. With no tuning whatsoever except the bare minimum to make it drive reliably, it goes high 14's in the 1/4. I know with better gearing and more converter and some actual drag tuning it'd break into the 13's. You have a little more cam and so probably would go a little faster.

Its not hard to put together a daily driver 383 that will turn low 13's in street trim. My 7.6-1 comp 400 turned 13.3's in full daily driver trim.
I used the 10" streetfighet TCI converter. I would stay away from the TCI converters unless its a low stall or you turn alot of RPM.
The converter slipped so much in 3rd gear I could turn 13.25 if I used 2nd through the traps and got a best of 13.14 using 3rd.
My friend tried the same converter and lost 3 mph so he gave it away.
I'm putting my engine back together but with 516 heads that I will port and have hardened ex seats and the big 1.81 ex valves put in.

Default buildup

Sounds pretty good. The only thing I would change is the intake, to a rpm, or a wieand dualplane. The torker never worked that well. I know the combo that plumebody has and the dualplane works great with the bigger cam that he has than the one you picked. Just my opinion. Good luck!!!!

Default Someday...

Phoenix, someday I plan on stroking it out to 431 CIs and topping it off with Performer RPM heads(ported) an RPM intake and a hughes Solid cam. But that wouldbe a $6000 engine!

Thumbs up

Sounds pretty good but I would definetly go with more gear then the 3.23,s . Here is my 383 Dart combo.

70 383 block with stock pistons and bore.
452 heads with stock valves and milled .060 for a true 9.5 and some mild pocket porting.
Stock crank & rods.
MP .484 cam set at 104 and stock rockers with shims.
Torker intake with 750 DP.
Stock dist with curve kit and orange box.
CPPA headers.
727 with manual valve body and TA 10" tight 3000 convertor.
8 3/4 with 3.91,s

This is in a 72 Dart with best et of 12.41 at 110 mph and this is a street car that I drive to the track some 90 mile round trip ! Ron

Fury boy;

I would go for a set of 9-1 to 9.5-1 pistons to start with. I know , being a big block theres allready enuff cubes to run well even with low comp. And those tires @ 25 inches should be used for a quick seat in the garage. You'll just blow them off the rims @ the track. 26 by 9 or 10 slicks under there would be a good place to start for the track.

Sounds like a good deal, but I'd put more gear in it.The intake is fine,I've used that and the Tarantula for almost 30 years.
