Question

All right, IF I was still looking for more power but I just had new valves and springs put on my BONE STOCK 906s, Would it be worth buying a bare set of Stage Vs? I think these cost about $839 but how much HP could I see? What are the Combustion chamber sizes?

Fury Boy, I don't have the info you are looking for-- but while you are asking about the Stage V's I would like to know if the exhaust ports are raised or are they the same as the 906's? I am also looking for some better heads, but don't want to have different custom headers made for my Daytona.

Edelbrock should be releasing the their new aluminum head within the next 6 months. It should put the Stage V heads to shame and only cost about $400 - $600 more, ready to bolt on.

Thumbs up

As of a couple of years ago the stag 5s got a face lift and can be had in stock replacement to max wedge ports.very strong and economical option.

Standard stage 5's flow about the same as mid reworked 906's. Using them out of the box, I wouldn't get real excited about all the power I was going to have if the 906's weren't worn out(to many valve jobs etc.) With work they can be a real good street strip head.

p. s. No the ports are not raised

I have heard good things about the stage 5 heads. But if you have $ inthe 906,s already I would use them. But I would never use them bone stock. There is alot to be gained by doing bowl work and exhaust porting, dont bother doing the intake runners unless you have more than then 550 lift. I feel even a street car can benefit from this. If you want to move to the next level the eldebrocks that are coming out are looking good.Sport

I've written about The V's before. They will go 285/215 @ .550 with only mild bowl work. they can go 305-310 and around 230 on the exhausts without getting them too thin. mine are going back in for a Phase II rework before I plop them down on the new 508.

You won't even get close to 275 intake flow with a 906/452 without having to sacrifice the very good low lift flow/torque producing characteristics of the production B heads. This is where the short side radius comes into play and why the difference is a little less significant on an all-out drag motor where the low/mid range power is "side-stepped". then again, for an All-out motor, almost everybody opts for Indy's or B1/BS
heads anyway.

On a street motor, roughly every 4.1 of intake cfm is 1 potential horsepower PER CYLINDER. To hit 280-285, you'd need to max-out 452s to the point where they were so thin (water jackets near the seats)they wouldn't be suitable for street use. On the v's, you can actually feel the short side radius difference in the ports, and the roofs of the ports are raised, slightly maybe, but significantly. The dog-leg around the intake pushrod is virtually eliminated as well which makes a significant improvement. You can grind it out on a 452 and epoxy it back but that's a lot of grinding and labor. The Stage V heads flow more air with the same port CC, which helps your torque curve and VE by keeping the port velocity high.

By the time you put new guides and hardened seats in old heads, your 1/2 way to a set of new V's. Bowl ported V's flow about the same (and better in the low/mid .200-400's)as out of the box S/R Indy's for about 400 less complete. Mine cost me around $1300 with 2.19 and 1.81"s, port work, .035" decking (stock cc's on mine were about 88) and a good Serdi valve job. S/R's are about $1500 plus the oil re-route kit. I believe The S/R's also need special longer head bolts with washers. Edelbrocks (or any Aluminum head)will need washer bolts too.I chose the V's over the Indy S/Rs because I wanted to keep the underhood on My 70 R/T looking factory.

I know this is a little off the wall. But in the interest of having factory looking heads what about the new iron max wedge heads with the Indy single or dual plane intake? Does anyone have any imput on this combo?
