I think my transmission is haunted.
I've done several 727 rebuilds without a hitch. But my latest has me stumped. Maybe you can help.
In D-1 & D-2 & Manual-1 & Manual-2, but not D-3, it whistles like the wind, getting higher in pitch as the RPMs go up. Shifting from (D-2 to D-3) or (Manual-2 to D-3) or into R from either P or N, it squeals like a cat whose tail just got stepped on. Kickdown linkage, band adjustment, fluid level/color have been triple checked. Some metallic debris in pan, but no big shavings, just looks like some glitter. I have seen more debris with trannies that work just fine. I think it is haunted. Any ideas on what might be wrong before I have at tearing this thing back out? Thanks in advance. |

My guess is that you have a check ball missing or in the wrong location.
I will think more on it tonight. Definitely some thing to do with the direct clutch curcuit. fox |

I'm also getting a whistle. Mine is only in reverse in my feather-footed wife's /6-A904 Dart. It's not loud, but it's definitely noticable and the stupid trans was rebuilt in Sept. before we moved. Again, fluid is up to par and clean. Don't know either Tsteiner.

Gear Whine
When I switched to a TCI Break-a-Way converter I noticed a whine at slow speeds (it may do it all the time but I just can hear it with the hammer down) I never did hear it with the stock converter. Otherwise it runs fine. So I think my problem is the TCI converter which doesn't surprise me because it sucks anyway.

fox,
I'm going to pull the valve body tonight and check. It's the last thing I can do before bringing it out. Hopefully you're right and I won't have to. I'll let all know what I find. |

Well, before I pulled the valve body out, I decided to do some hyd. pressure tests. Here's what I found. I need some help in interpreting the results though (or at least a sanity check on my conclusions).
Line Pressure: 60 psi @ 1000 rpm in D,2,1. 0 psi in P,R,N. Rear Servo Apply Pressure: 190/275 psi @ 1000/1600 rpm in R. 60 psi @ 1000 rpm in 1. 0 psi in P,N,D,2. Front Servo Release Pressure: 0/60 psi @ 1000/1600 rpm in D, the rise to 60 psi here is gradual, taking about 3 seconds time. 0 psi in P,R,N,2,1. Governor Pressure: 50 psi @ 40 mph in D. So I figure the reason it is squealing on 2 to D and D-2 to D-3 upshift is because the front band and front clutch are being applied at the same time. My problem is I don't really understand what could/would cause that. The front band is in adjustment (my D-1 to D-2 upshift is fine). My upshifts happen at the correct speeds (15 and 30 under normal driving conditions). Any ideas??? Anything I am forgetting to check? |
