I have a 79 727 from a van and an 89 904 from a 5th ave witch one would be better for 80% street 20% drag vehicle 400+ ci small block 3400 lb. 10 inch slicks will be used cost and H.P. loss are concerns

The 727. Don't use lock up TF's in a performance car, they were not meant for that.

Build-up costs of either trans should be similar. All else being equal, the 904 will be about .15 faster in ET. Use a cooler either way.
Of course the 727 is stronger With a 904 you can get a 2.71 low gear for probably under $200, unless you know what to look for at the salvage yard.
(Which I'm not sure of.) However, it may be more difficult to control traction with the big small block.

The 904 you have should already have the 2.74 first gear.

Ultimately, the 727 will most likely live longer, but it is heavier and will cost you some ET. I ran a 904 in my drag car and never had a failure because of the smaller size. Only failure was because of my own stupidity.
