I currently have a 440 fitted with closed chamber 516 heads @ 9:1 CR. If I go with the open chamber 452 head, how much would I need to mill off to keep or improve the current CR?

The formula is as follows:
To reduce the volume of the combustion chamber 1 cc -.005" must be milled from the head. For each .010" removed from the head, .012" must be removed from the intake and .017" from the bottom. Remember that if you mill the heads you will need to mill the intake. Then you are basically stuck with a matched intake and heads. The other problem with the 516 is the small exhaust valve (1.60). Swapping to the 452 gets you the 1.74 exhaust valve. That helps alot in flow. I wouldn't mill the heads. Just pocket port the 452 heads and bolt them on. The better flow of the heads will make up for the loss of compression. Plus you gain hardened valve seats with the 452. My 452 flow almost 300 in and ex. You can make these heads work great. I'm sorry I made a mistake on the volume:
Here's the correct formula: remove .0042" per 1cc. For each .010" from the head take .0123" from the intake face. I didn't take into account the open chamber. Sorry. Jason indychamp@hotmail.com |

Don't mill the intake...instead mill the intake side of the head .0123" for each .010" off of the bottom of the head. That way you can swap intakes anytime you want.

The closed chamber heads have about 8-10cc smaller chambers than the open chamber heads, so about .040" will bring you even with the closed chambers CC. Have you checked your current 9:1? Are the 516's already milled?

take the time and cc your heads to make sure what volume they are before you mill them. once you mill them you can't put it back on.
