I've been calling every junkyard around looking for an A-500, but I've had no luck so far. Because most salvage yard personnel don't know an A-500 from a Powerglide, I have to resort to asking if they have transmissions from specific vehicles, vehicles that I think may have what I want. I was under the impression that A-500's were used in V6 Dakota's and D150's, but I have no idea if there were any other truck/van/car models I should be asking for. I was hoping somebody out there might have better insight regarding this. By the way, the trans I find will be swapped into a '71 Cuda with a mild 340. I've read articles about A-518 swaps, and I've determined that I really don't want to hack up the tunnel to make room for it. I'm assuming that with a custom tranny mount, the A-500 will fit with no surgery needed. Any advice here would also be appreciated.

If you don't want to "hack" the car up, then stick with a 904/727. The problem with *ALL* O/D installations isn't the trans body but the O/D unit out back. It *WILL NOT* clear the cross member! There is an outfit called Gear Vendors 1-800-999-9555 that sells O/D units that bolt to the rear of your trans, but I'm not sure this will clear the cross member, best to call & ask. WARNING! GV's O/D unit costs about $1,000 or more!
I have an A-518 in a 68 Dart. I know! DB |
