Ram50V8, was it true that 9 inch axles can swap into the Ram 50 Rear Axle? We were thinking of narrowing the rear anyways for mini tubs so swapping the axle swould get us the Dodge 5 lug pattern again.

I meant that I want to swap in the 9 inch axles into the Ram 50 Housing. Are the 8 3/4 axles close? I have a couple pairs that I can have cut and resplined.

9" ford axle shafts will not swap into the mitsu hsg. without a lot of work. And besides if you want a 5 lug pattern it is cheaper, easier and stronger to have a complete 9" narrowed. Even the 8" ford will be easier. (it looks just like a 9" only slightly smaller and uses a lot of the same parts.

Biggrin

We had a A-body 8 3/4 housing in the truck but we didn't have the money for the Moser big bolt conv. axles so we put the Mits. rear back in.

The A-body rear is the perfect width and would allow a 10.5 slick under the truck with the stock springs.

So the A Body rear fits in there? We will probably have to use the stock rear end for a while, but I would like to see some options for a better rear end that'll hold up to a lot of hp and slicks.

By the way, we're pulling the old 2.6L out this weekend in ours, and hopefully will be ordering the welder in the next week or two. We decided to go ahead with the Weld Pak 100. Hopefully we will be finished before this school year is over, but it all depends mostly on how fast we can get the 318 slapped together.

I'm not too worried about the rear end right now, since we're not planning on slicks or much power out of the 318 to start with. But, an A-Body rear would be a nice easy to obtain swap!

The only problem with the A-body rear is that they don't make the drums or brakes for the small bolt pattern. You will have to have a set of big bolt C-body axle cut and resplined or order a set of Moser conversion axles. You will have to swap the backing plates as well as the drums and brakes to the C-body or any big bolt pattern units.

When you look for C-body axles you will have to pick the ones that have the tapper from small diameter to big diameter far as possible for the end being cut and resplined. They will need the same diameter to work with. We went through 10 sets until we found a set. Since the C-body had the widest rear this is the one to dig through.

We just didn't have the $300 bucks for cutting and resplining. Or the $600 Canadian for the Moser Axles.

The 8.25 should (they use them in dakotas and jeeps) be strong enough. They came in A bodies and would have the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. If you have the time and lots of scrap yards you might just find a sure grip from an a body, and if your area used diplomats or caravells for cop cars they usally have sure grips (however they have a wider track, and you would have to mix and match parts). You can tell the 8.25 by the bolt on inspection cover, and an oval shape. be careful the 7.25 also has an bolt on inspection cover, but looks like an octagone.

I was talking about the A-body 8 3/4 not the 8.25 rear.

Today at the local pick your part I found a 64 ford fairlane (5 lug) and the axle was a perfect fit for my 86 ram 50. 56" overall, same as mine. but the spring perches ar a little wider, otherwise perfect...and it has 10" brakes simular to the HD brakes available stock on my ram

Cool

Great...is is a 9 inch or 8 inch. Even though it is a Ford rear it is cheap to buy parts and there are a ton of parts available at swap meets. I'm gonna make a trip to the junkyard when the snow is gone up here.

That sounds cool for the rear end, but what about the front? Are there any spindles or rotors that will bolt on to get a 5 lug bolt pattern? That would be great, because it's hard to find really nice looking wheels in that particular lug pattern (stupid 6 lugs! )

Well js, there are many fine choices available in 6 lug and most 5 lug design wheels are offered in 6 lug patterens but you have to inquire about them. As far as 5 lug conversions are concerned for the front I have no idea at this time but I am researching the matter. As for bbaspense's ? it is an 8" rear that I aquired out of the 64 but according to a friend of mine (who in this area is Ford god!!) if you ind an early 60's to 70 ford with 5 lug it will have 10" brakes or bigger and could be had in 8' or 9" diff. the key is to look for 5 lug and hipo v8 or big block. i.E. 289 4V, or any fe motor (352 through 427fe) and a manual trans is a + . Also the 8" is 28 spline as is the smallest 9" and with a little swapping and cuttint/welding a vary useable rear can be made. Large 5 lug mopar wheels will fit a ford but ford wheels will not fit a mopar ( smaller center hole on the ford is the problem) Now the rear I found (64 ford)is the same overall dimensions as 78 through 86 ram50's but on a hunch I measured an 87 and newer and found it to be wider.

Red face

I'll do some diggin' at the local wrecking yard and look for one for my brothers truck.

By the way, do you know if the colt rear from the early '70 is the same and would it have more than a 3.90 gear?

We found one and were gonna steal the gears if they are better.

I can send you some drawings I made from when I built my brothers trcuk almost 2 years ago.

Only do this swap if you can weld or don't mind doing some cutting.

It's basically a trial fit swap. It is quite simply.
