Default 904 Tranny set up help???

Anybody have any advice for me to set up my 904? It came out of a '67 Dart. Its going in my '75 Dart Sport, 340, 8 3/4 with 3.23 SG. I will be doing double duty on the street and strip (thats why i'm going with 3.23's). I'd like to use a Manual VB with a Pro Ratchet shifter. What would be your suggestions to get it set up for the least amount of $. I need a convertor too.. Where can I get an affordable stall convertor? Remember I'm a college student eating plenty of Bologna and Ramen noodles as it is... As affordable as possible... Thanks guys!

We use the B&M masters rebuild kit. Summit sells it for 200. Our valve body is a turbo action manual reverse. And the Converter is a Coan 10in flashes at 3800. If your looking to go cheap then you wont like the 600 price tag for the converter. But this is all i recmond. The valve body is 150-200. We have a local guy who does all of our tranny work and gives us good prices so it is hard to really say what you will have in it. For us to refreshin ours it cost about 900-1000 and that is him pulling it out for us and having it back in within a week. That is also the price to send the converter back to get freshend up.

If you use a 67 trans, the input shaft and the pilot on the converter are a smaller diameter than the 68 up units. Options are:
1. Use a later trans.
2. Use the early trans, but have the converter built with the early splines, and the big pilot.
3. Use the early trans and early converter, and make a spacer ring to fit on the pilot of the converter, so it fits in the larger hole in the crank.

Oh sorry, forgot to mention that the crank in the 340 is a '67 out of a 273. So that all works already. Or would it be more cost-effective to get a 727?

I would stay with the 904, less weight and less rotating mass, evertything being equal the car will be quicker with the 904. One thing I would do, if the motor is not assembled yet, machine the hole in the end of the crank for the later converter. This will give you more options, can use later 904 or 727 trans, or early trans with a spacer ring on the converter pilot. With the small hole crank, you are locked in to using the early converter, not many of those available at swap meets.

This is probably another dumb question. Can my torque convertor that I have now be rebuilt/modified with a higher stall? The one I have now matches up to both the engine and tranny, but it is stock.

Yes, but I don't know if it is worth it. Call some of the converter companies, and talk to them about what you want. Get their reccomendations and prices. Make sure you tell them you have te early trans, with the small shaft and pilot.

Default On the cheap?

MoPar shift improver kit will help with a firmer shift. Turn up the line pressure and readjust the linkage and your set. With the money saved, get a deep pan and cooler. Worked for me.

I'm doing the same sort of project for my Navy son, who is on a carrier over there. He has a '66 Barracuda with a 360. Wants to know whether to put in a 727 or built 904. Anyone know about 727 clearance issues in an early "A" body?

727 in a '64-66 is a tight fit, you need to pound out the tunnel a bit to get a good fit. It was a bit overkill in that light body.

The 999 is a heavy duty version of the 904. Has some beefier internal parts, Also, I think it has a lower fist gear ratio. I know some did, but not sure if the low ratio 1st gear was in all of them.

My son is very tough on components. I don't know if I want a 999, 904, or 727. I'm looking for advice and opinion to help me out. He wants it to be right when he returns.

The 727 can be built to a bullet proof state. It is a little slower than the 904 series transmissions. Which includes the 999.
The 999 came stock behind 360's.
