timing does not advance
I am still trying to track down some rough running, and bad gas milage. I checked the timing again and as I rev the engine the timing does not advance. I thought it would? Is this normal?
Also, I can not even figure what kind of ignition I have. I do not have an electronic box, vacuum advance, or a lean burn box on the air filter. I do have something behind the battery above the fender. It has what looks like a vaccum advance and has a tube concecting it with fresh air intake. What is this thing? Is it some sort of truck lean burn control unit? Its on a 318. Thanks |

You have the first variant of "computer controlled ignition". That box on the fender is a computer or microprocessor and that is what controls the ignition and advance. The distributor is just sending the spark to the corresponding plug. The best thing to do is change over to the Mopar electronic ignition system.

advance
I second Christophers motion-lose that factory set up and put the mp conversion kit in.You should have all your advance in by 2800 rpm.I used to run my 318 with 40 total with vac hooked up,worked great.Be very careful to listen for detonation....too much advance will burn holes in pistons(not good)It would be a good idea to run premium fuel but you'll appreciate the power increase and fuel mileage.good luck!!!!!
